This tutorial explores an easy-to-achieve braid and down hairstyle, perfect for various occasions. It’s a gentle and stylish way to keep your hair down while adding a touch of sophistication. This look prioritizes hair health and avoids excessive styling products, making it suitable for those seeking a balance between beauty and care.
Begin with clean, brushed hair. Washing your hair the night before styling can provide extra texture for easier manipulation. Air-drying is preferable, as it enhances natural texture. If your hair tends to be straight after air-drying, like mine has become since having children, dry shampoo can be used at the roots to add volume and grip.
For this particular style, I recommend using SheaMoisture Peace Rose Oil Complex Nourish & Silken Shampoo and Conditioner. This product is designed to restore lost moisture to dry and brittle hair, which can be especially beneficial if you have hard water or feel your hair needs extra nourishment. I religiously use SheaMoisture’s shaving creams because I love how smooth they keep my legs and underarms, so I figured I would give their hair products a try too! SheaMoisture also offers Argan Oil & Almond Milk Smooth & Tame Shampoo and Conditioner, which is on my list for my next shopping trip to Target!
Part your hair to the side, which is my usual. On the smaller side, separate the front section and tie off the remaining hair to keep it out of the way. Create a reverse French braid, pulling each section UNDER instead of over. This technique gives the braid a more prominent, raised appearance. Secure the end of the braid with a small, clear elastic.
Repeat this process on the other side of your head, creating a second reverse French braid. Once both braids are complete, gently pull at the sections of each braid to make them wider and fuller. This adds volume and a softer, more romantic look.

Take the two braids and bring them together at the middle back of your head. Wrap one braid under and over the other, as if you're starting a knot. This creates a secure base for the next step. Take the two hanging braid pieces and twist them around each other. Use a small ponytail holder to attach the two pieces together, then remove the other two ponytail holders that were holding each individual braid.
While the braided half-up style is beautiful on its own, adding curls elevates the look. Use a Hot Tools Signature Series curling iron to create loose, flowing curls. The adjustable temperature settings on these tools allow you to customize the heat based on your hair thickness, minimizing damage.
Shea butter is the central ingredient to all SheaMoisture products, and they ethically source their shea butter from 13 women’s cooperatives in Northern Ghana as part of its purpose-driven Community Commerce business model. Under this model, SheaMoisture’s investments in these shea butter cooperatives help women entrepreneurs develop self-sustaining business! How awesome is that? I’m all for supporting brands that support others in whatever way that may be, so this is pretty amazing to me. Right now Ibotta is offering $2 back on your next SheaMoisture Hair Care Purchase at Target!
