Brazilian Wax Aftercare: Your Guide to Smooth, Healthy Skin

A Brazilian wax is a popular hair removal method that leaves your skin feeling smooth and hair-free. However, the process can leave your skin sensitive and vulnerable, making proper aftercare essential. Following a few simple guidelines after waxing is important to soothe your skin and preserve your results. This article provides comprehensive Brazilian wax aftercare tips to help you maintain smooth, healthy skin and avoid irritation or ingrown hairs.

Understanding Brazilian Waxing

A Brazilian wax removes all or most pubic hair from the front, sides, back, and around the anus. This method offers a thoroughly hairless area, reducing the need for frequent shaving. While waxing is generally safe, it leaves the skin in a sensitive state for approximately 24 to 36 hours afterward.

Benefits of Brazilian Waxing

  • Less irritation (in the long run): Waxing, when done correctly, may be less likely to cause rashes and bumps compared to shaving.
  • Long-lasting results: Wax pulls hair out from the root, so you’ll stay smooth longer than you would with a razor. A Brazilian wax can keep you hair-free for three or four weeks.
  • Less hair over the long term: Repeated waxing often leads to softer and thinner hair regrowth. Over time, waxing becomes easier, less painful, and requires less frequent sessions.

Potential Risks and Side Effects

  • Rash: Bumps and redness are common, especially right after waxing. These are usually temporary and resolve on their own.
  • Itchiness: The waxed skin might feel itchy as it heals. Avoid scratching to prevent irritation.
  • Vulvodynia: A 2019 study showed that removing pubic hair may increase the risk of developing vulvodynia, chronic pain of the vulva, although this is not super common.

Immediate Aftercare (First 24-48 Hours)

The first 24 to 48 hours after your Brazilian wax are crucial for proper healing and preventing complications.

Avoid Touching the Waxed Area

One of the most important things to do after a Brazilian wax is to avoid touching the waxed area. Your skin will be more sensitive right after the waxing session, so refrain from rubbing or scratching it. Touching your skin can introduce bacteria, leading to possible skin irritation or even an infection.

No Hot Showers, Saunas, or Hot Tubs

After your Brazilian wax treatment, it’s essential to avoid hot showers, saunas, or hot tubs for at least 24 hours. Hot water can open up pores, which may lead to irritation, increased sensitivity, or even skin infections. Stick to lukewarm water for the first day post-wax.

Wear Loose Clothing

Tight clothing can cause friction, which may irritate the freshly waxed skin. Opt for loose-fitting, breathable fabrics, such as cotton, to help your skin heal. Tight underwear or pants can trap moisture and heat, leading to potential irritation or discomfort in the pubic region.

Stay Out of the Sun

Your skin is more sensitive after a Brazilian waxing session, and exposure to the sun or tanning beds can lead to redness, irritation, or even burns. It’s important to avoid direct sun exposure for at least 48 hours following your Brazilian waxing service. If you must go outside, apply sunscreen to protect your skin. Make sure to wait at least 48 hours before sun exposure if you don't want to run the risk of burns and scarring. Freshly waxed skin is very sensitive as its outer protective layer has been stripped. Therefore, sun exposure, in this case, could be more damaging than usual. Your skin might also develop hyperpigmentation in the waxed area if you expose it to the sun without any protection, which brings us to a very common waxing aftercare reminder: wear sunscreen at all times.

Avoid Swimming

Wait at least 48 hours to swim in the beach or the pool after waxing. Salt water might sensitize your skin even further and cause bumps on freshly waxed skin.

Skip the Gym

Not doing any exercise at all would be best for your after-wax care, but that may be a little extreme. Sweat (and the bacteria that thrives in sweaty skin), as well as friction, might cause more damage than good on your sensitized skin, so why take the chance?

Say No to Chemical Peels

While gentle exfoliation is a good after-wax care practice, chemical peels are a big no-no. Waxing has already removed the superficial layer of skin cells, thus peeling would only strip those layers more deeply, over-sensitizing the skin and increasing the risk of skin damage.

Avoid Harsh Products

After a Brazilian wax, your skin will be more sensitive than usual. Avoid applying products containing harsh chemicals like benzoyl peroxide, which can cause irritation. Stick to gentle, skin-friendly products, and consult with your waxing specialist if you’re unsure about which products to use.

Hands Off!

We know it’s tempting-but don’t touch, scratch, or pick at the area. If you notice a bump forming, resist the urge to pop it.

Long-Term Aftercare (Days 3-7 and Beyond)

Once the initial sensitivity subsides, focus on maintaining skin health and preventing ingrown hairs.

Exfoliate Regularly

Exfoliation is essential for preventing ingrown hairs after a Brazilian wax. Gently exfoliating the skin removes dead skin cells that can block hair follicles and cause unwanted hair to grow under the skin. However, make sure to exfoliate at least 48 hours after your Brazilian waxing service to avoid irritating the skin. A mild exfoliator designed for sensitive skin works best. About two to three days after your treatment is the perfect time. Your pores will have closed and the skin has recovered.

  • Exfoliating products: An exfoliating dry brush like the Merben Bikini Brush can help prevent ingrown hairs and is great for sensitive skin. Bonus: It also stimulates circulation, eliminates toxins, improves internal organ function and reduces the appearance of cellulite. Waxing the City Sugar Scrub is a physical exfoliant that combines brown sugar cane, organic sugar cane, and bamboo powder along with the moisturizing power of aloe, organic shea butter, mango seed butter, Vitamin E extract and organic avocado oil. Your skin will thank you! The Lalicious Whipped Sugar Scrubs are great for sloughing away dry skin cells.

Moisturize Daily

Keeping your skin hydrated is crucial for maintaining the smooth, soft feel after your Brazilian bikini wax. Dry skin can lead to discomfort and irritation. Use a gentle moisturizer or soothing lotion to nourish the skin and keep it soft. Avoid products with harsh chemicals or fragrances, as these can exacerbate skin sensitivities.

  • Moisturizers: The Lalicious Body Butter rejuvenates dry skin thanks to intense hydration from shea butter, safflower oil, aloe vera, and vitamin E. Waxing the City’s Bakuchiol Body Cream is loaded with antioxidants, making it perfect for post-wax care. The body cream brightens and firms skin while improving elasticity and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Opt for non-comedogenic oils like jojoba, tea tree, or grapeseed.

Address Irritation Promptly

Sometimes, irritation is unavoidable. Skin sensitivity and minor bumps may occur after a Brazilian wax, especially for first-time customers. If irritation doesn’t go away after a couple of days, consider consulting your waxing specialist for advice on proper care and treatment. It’s also a good idea to avoid applying makeup, body oils, or perfume to the area. Cold compresses work great for after-wax calming and care because they reduce red bumps, irritation, and inflammation. Cool gels with naturally calming ingredients like aloe vera or tea tree oil can also help soothe freshly waxed skin.

Maintain Regular Waxing Appointments

Maintaining smooth skin means staying consistent with your waxing services. While you may notice hair growth after a few weeks, it’s essential to wait for the proper length of hair (typically about a grain of rice in length) before booking your next Brazilian waxing session. Regular waxing reduces the chances of stubborn hairs and helps with longer-lasting results. Consistent waxing leads to finer, slower regrowth and fewer ingrown hairs over time. ✅ Pro Tip: Schedule your next wax at the end of your current visit.

What to Avoid After Waxing

  • The sun: Your skin is extra sensitive after a waxing, and exposing it to the sun can cause hyperpigmentation or sun damage. We recommend avoiding direct sunlight for 48 hours before and after your hair removal treatment. Similarly, avoid tanning beds for 48 hours after your service. If you’re getting a spray tan, we would recommend getting your tan 1-2 days after your wax. This will ensure your skin is hair-free and has had time to recover.
  • Swimming in a pool: Even a lake or ocean can contain bacteria and may cause an infection when your hair follicles are extra vulnerable. Believe it or not, a bath can also introduce impurities. The best option right after a waxing treatment is a lukewarm shower. Avoid hot water as it can also dehydrate your skin.
  • Exfoliating right away: Give your skin a few days to recover, since waxing itself is a form of exfoliation.
  • Using products that have harsh chemicals like artificial fragrance: They can irritate your skin when your pores are most vulnerable.
  • Tweezing between eyebrow waxing appointments: And don’t tweeze between appointments or you risk messing up the careful shape of your eyebrows.

Addressing Common Concerns

What’s Normal After a Wax?

Your skin might be red and irritated for a few hours up to a day or two after your hair removal treatment. That’s totally normal, and it usually resolves on its own. Some of what you experience could include:

  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Itching
  • Bumps
  • Ingrown hairs
  • Stubble

Can I Shave Between Brazilian Waxes?

We don’t recommend it. Shaving disrupts the hair cycle and makes your next wax more painful.

Can I Get a Bacterial Reaction or Infection After Waxing?

In the rare case that you develop folliculitis, a bacterial skin infection, apply warm compresses a few times a day and wait at least 30 days before you try any form of hair removal.

How to Prevent Ingrown Hair

Regular exfoliation will help prevent ingrown hairs, using a non-oil-based moisturizer and keeping your hands away from your waxed skin will help prevent ingrown hairs. It also hinders breakouts or pimples, which can also happen after a hair removal treatment. For Brazilian and bikini wax aftercare in particular, we love Fur products as our post-wax care go-to.
