Combination Brows vs. Microblading: A Comprehensive Guide to Choosing the Right Brow Enhancement Technique

Permanent makeup procedures have revolutionized the beauty industry, offering solutions for those seeking to enhance their features with long-lasting results. Among the most popular of these procedures are microblading, powder brows, nano brows, and combination brows. Each technique offers unique benefits and caters to different skin types, aesthetic preferences, and lifestyles. This article provides a detailed comparison of these techniques to help you make an informed decision about which one is best suited for your individual needs.

Introduction to Permanent Makeup Procedures

Permanent makeup procedures, also known as semi-permanent makeup or cosmetic tattooing, involve implanting pigment into the skin to create the appearance of makeup. These procedures can enhance various facial features, including eyebrows, eyelids, and lips. The goal is to provide a natural-looking enhancement that reduces the need for daily makeup application.

What are the main types of permanent makeup procedures for eyebrows?

  • Microblading
  • Ombre Powder Brows
  • Nano Brows
  • Combination Brows

Microblading: Achieving Natural, Hair-Like Brows

Microblading is a technique that replaces sparse individual hairs for a very natural result. This brow technique uses pigment to create hyper-realistic hair-like strokes. The pigment is implanted into the skin manually using a hand-held tool during your brow session. The device is crafted of several tiny needles that add a semi-permanent pigment to the skin. The microblade goes deeper into the skin’s epidermis (upper layers) to help create a natural-looking effect.

The Microblading Procedure

During a microblading session, a technician uses a hand-held tool with several tiny needles to create fine, hair-like strokes in the skin. These strokes mimic the natural growth pattern of eyebrow hairs, resulting in a very realistic and natural-looking effect. The pigment is implanted into the upper layers of the skin, which is why microblading is considered a semi-permanent procedure.

Ideal Candidates for Microblading

Microblading is best suited for individuals who:

  • Want a soft and natural look
  • Have normal to dry skin
  • Have not-too-dense but not too sparse brows

Longevity and Maintenance of Microbladed Brows

Microbladed brows typically last for 8-12 months before needing a touch-up. The longevity of the results can vary depending on factors such as skin type, lifestyle, and sun exposure. Regular touch-up appointments are necessary to maintain the desired color and shape of the brows.

Ombre Powder Brows: Creating a Soft, Shaded Look

Ombre Powder Brows give the look of gradient shaded makeup that can be as subtle or as bold as you prefer. Ombre shading uses a small machine to position very thin dots of pigment into the skin to create a 100% customizable look. Brows look most like powder makeup - hence the name Powder Brows. Ombre Powder Brows can also cover old microblading, semi-permanent makeup, or cosmetic tattooing that has (somewhat) faded.

The Ombre Powder Brow Procedure

The ombre powder brow technique involves using a machine to create tiny dots of pigment in the skin. This results in a soft, shaded effect that resembles the look of powder makeup. The technician can customize the intensity of the shading to create a subtle or bold look, depending on the client's preference. Ombre brows utilize shading and a gradient of pigments to create a soft, natural fill. The artist starts with a lighter shade towards the front of the brow near the nose. They gradually build up to a darker pigment towards the tail end. This achieves a subtle ombre effect.

Ideal Candidates for Ombre Powder Brows

Ombre Powder Brows are ideal for individuals who:

  • Like the look of powder-filled brows
  • Want a stronger shape to their brows
  • Have sensitive or more mature skin
  • Have oily skin, acne-prone skin, or enlarged pores
  • Want to add definition or darken their brows
  • Don’t want to use makeup to fill in their brows

Longevity and Maintenance of Ombre Powder Brows

Ombre powder brows tend to last longer than microblading, up to 2-3 years between touch-ups. The shading technique allows the pigment to saturate well and adhere nicely. Those who regularly fill in their brows but want to cut down daily makeup time are great candidates for ombre. Ombre works well on most skin types. The smooth shading adheres nicely on oily skin where microblading can struggle. While ombre lasts longer than microblading, refreshers are still needed. Plan for a touch-up every 1-2 years. Proper aftercare and sun protection will help ombre brows retain their beautiful shaded effect.

Nano Brows: Precision and Natural-Looking Results

Nano blading is more similar to Microblading than Ombre Powder Brows. Nano Brows fill in scarce, thin brows for a thicker appearance. Nano Brows use a smaller needle with a hand-held machine to deposit pigment into the epidermis to create natural-looking hair strokes. The super-fine needle creates hair-like tattoo strokes that can thicken the look of the brows and change the overall shape of your brow. The small needle allows for excellent precision and accuracy to give you natural-looking results.

The Nano Brow Procedure

Nano brows are created using a small needle with a hand-held machine to deposit pigment into the epidermis to create natural-looking hair strokes. The super-fine needle creates hair-like tattoo strokes that can thicken the look of the brows and change the overall shape of your brow.

Ideal Candidates for Nano Brows

Nano Brows are perfect for those who:

  • Is looking for natural, crisp results
  • Has thicker or more oily skin
  • Wants to fill in missing or sparse brow hairs
  • Doesn’t want to use makeup to fill in their brows
  • Wants to change the shape and thickness of their brows

Combination Brows: The Best of Both Worlds

Combo brows is a combination of microblading and shading. This technique blends both hair-like strokes and shading into one blended outcome. This makes the brow look fuller and slightly more pigmented than what can be achieved by just microblading. Hair strokes are placed in the front of the brow and shading is done towards the arch and tail for a seamless brow with a lot more coverage.

The Combination Brow Procedure

The Combo Brow Look Combination brows are characterized by feathered hair strokes from the beginning to the middle, and then transitions to a powdered finish toward the tails. This is what creates the added definition that’s not so prominent in microbladed brows.

Ideal Candidates for Combination Brows

Most of the time, knowing that there is an option to get combination brows is what makes clients finally decide on getting a treatment. This is especially true when they can’t decide between the two.

Longevity and Maintenance of Combination Brows

Combo brows enhance all brow types and facial structures by allowing customization. Whether desiring a soft, fluffy look or bold definition, combo brows deliver versatile options.

Additional Considerations When Choosing a Brow Enhancement Technique

Covering Old Eyebrow Tattoos

For those who’ve had previous PMU (permanent makeup) work done on their eyebrows, such as eyebrow tattooing, there are several factors to consider when choosing the right treatment to cover them. One thing to consider is the depth of the ink that has been deposited into the skin. Compared to microblading, tattooing deposits ink into the deeper layers of the dermis. Microblading is only recommended if the ink has not gone way too deep. Otherwise, the brows will remain very dark and the hairlike strokes will not be visible enough to make a difference. In this case, you might want to consider removal first before getting another semi-permanent eyebrow enhancement. However, if your tattooed brows have significantly faded plus you have oily skin, microshading will still be the best alternative.

Skin Type

Individuals who have normal to dry skin are perfect candidates for microblading. Since it uses a manual hand tool, the pigment doesn’t go as deep into the skin and when that’s done on an oilier skin, the retention will not be as good and it will not last as long. An alternative treatment called Microshading which typically uses a machine is more suitable for those with oily skin type.

Lifestyle

Your brows will get lighter and lighter overtime and there are many factors that contribute to how quickly your brows will fade. Brows will fade quicker for those that have oily skin or have a lot of sun exposure. Normally we recommend a yearly touch up for a color boost to keep your brows fresh.

The Healing Process and Aftercare

Every treatment time will be unique for each customer. After all, no two brows are alike. We definitely don’t like to rush here. Our number one priority is to give you flawless brows.

Healing Time

Everyone is different, and your healing process is individual. Typically Microblading can take around 4 to 5 weeks to heal fully. The time it takes to be healed entirely will vary from person to person, but you can expect your brows to have their final color after around 4 to 5 weeks.

Touch-Up Sessions

A free touch up session is imperative to achieve an optimal result. After your initial session your artist will schedule your free touch up session for no less than 4 weeks and no later than 10 weeks. Colors will fade significantly (30%-40%) as your skin heals, (may peel and scabs). A touch up session necessary to “perfect” any imperfections and add more color to areas that may have faded more than others.

The time it takes for a touch up session varies from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the condition of your brows. A touch up session is much shorter than the initial session because your shape is already there and only certain areas will need to be fixed.

The healing time for a touch up is usually much shorter than the initial session because it is less intense and there is less trauma to the skin. You can expect the healing period for a touch up to be about 7 days and there is usually very little to no scabbing.

Aftercare Instructions

Aftercare is critical, and taking care of your new brows is extremely important for longevity and best results.

  • Do not let any water, lotion, soap, or makeup touch your eyebrow area 7 days after your procedure.
  • Wash your face carefully around the eyebrow without getting water on the area. During the shower, keep your face away from the showerhead or take a bath.
  • After 4 days, make sure your hands are very clean, and gently apply the post-care ointment with a cotton swab and clean hands. Please be sure to use the ointment sparingly as your skin needs to heal itself. This can be done twice a day: morning and night. The brows should not appear greasy, glossy, or shiny which happens if you applied too much. This can suffocate the skin and delay healing. Never apply on wet/damp brows and continue putting on the ointment until your brows are no longer scabbing.

The following must be avoided 14 days post-procedure:

  • Touching of the eyebrow area except for rinsing and applying the post-care ointment with a cotton swab.
  • Picking, peeling or scratching of the brow area to avoid scarring of the area or removal of the pigment.
  • Sun tanning. Exposure to UV/UVA rays or chemicals as they have been known to cause a shift in color and premature fading.
  • Hot sauna, hot bath, long showers, or jacuzzi
  • Increased sweating
  • Swimming
  • Practicing sports
  • Heavy household cleaning where there is a lot of airborne debris.
  • Driving in an open-air vehicle such as convertibles, boats, bicycles, or motorcycles.
  • Facials, lasers, chemical treatments, peels, and any creams containing Retin-A or Glycolic acid on the treatment area
  • Drinking alcohol in excess as it may lead to slow healing of wounds.

Healing Timeline

Your brows will heal in 4 stages:

  • 1st Stage (Week 1) - Dark, Bold, and Unnatural: Brows will start to develop a thin layer of scab.
  • 2nd Stage (Week 2) - Itchy, Peeling, Patchy: The scab is starting to feel tight and dry. Itching and flaking will occur during this week. This is the beginning stages of scabs peeling off. Avoid picking or scratching as it can pull off scabs prematurely and cause patchy results or scarring.
  • 3rd Stage (Week 3) - Light and Uneven: Scabs are done peeling. Brows will appear very light after scabs come off (the lightness will vary for each individual), every week for up to 6 weeks, the color will continue to surface, and brows will get darker. Brows are safe from water and clients may return to their normal skincare routine.
  • 4th Stage (Week 4) - Brows Get Darker and Fuller: At this stage, the color of the brows is complete and all redness is gone. Brows have fully healed.
