Effective Eyebrow Microblading Removal Methods: A Comprehensive Guide

Microblading, a popular cosmetic procedure, has revolutionized the way people enhance their eyebrows. This technique involves tattooing fine, hair-like strokes to create fuller, more defined brows that can last for one to three years. However, trends change, personal preferences evolve, or the initial results may not be satisfactory. If you find yourself in a situation where you want to remove or adjust your microbladed eyebrows, you're not alone. Fortunately, several effective methods exist to safely and efficiently remove microblading.

Why Microblading Removal?

Eyebrow, lip, and eyeliner tattoos are commonly seen on women and men who desire thicker, fuller and more defined facial esthetics but do not want to fill them in with makeup every day. However, styles change and these cosmetic tattoos can also migrate and change in color over time. These are some of the many reasons why we see clients who want to successfully and effectively get cosmetic tattoo removal treatments.

Laser Tattoo Removal: The Gold Standard

Laser tattoo removal is one of the most widely recognized and safest methods for removing microblading. This technique uses specialized lasers to target and break down the pigment particles embedded in the skin. The laser emits intense pulses of light energy, which are absorbed by the pigment, causing it to fragment into smaller particles that the body can naturally eliminate.

How Laser Removal Works

As the laser removal of both decorative tattoos and microblading rely on the same general principle of selective photothermolysis, when treating mixed ink microblading a single color component is treated in each treatment session, and once that color is fully removed, the remaining colors which require a different laser wavelength for removal are then targeted. This process typically starts with the treatment of black pigment utilizing the Picosecond 1064nm wavelength, followed by treatment of the remaining red or yellow pigments, both of which respond very well to Picosecond 532nm wavelength.

PicoSure is a laser technology that’s changing the game in cosmetic procedures. Unlike traditional lasers that rely on intense heat energy to remove the tattoo, PicoSure uses rapid, ultra-short pulses to shatter the tattoo ink into tiny particles, which are then eliminated by the body.

At Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center, we utilize a proprietary two-step laser process to ensure comprehensive removal of microbladed eyebrows. This process involves the use of our specialized PicoSure 755nm wavelength laser, followed by the Picosure 532nm wavelength laser. This approach effectively targets and removes all colors of microblading pigment, including stubborn black, blue, and red colors. We begin the process using our 755nm wavelength laser, which precisely targets and breaks down the upper layer of black and blue pigments. Consequently, this step exposes the underlying red pigment commonly used in microblading pigment ink. We then proceed and complete your sessions using our PicoSure 532nm wavelength laser, as this particular wavelength is excellent at absorbing red pigments, effectively removing the exposed red color from the first step. So, how does PicoSure work in the context of eyebrow microblading removal? The process is surprisingly straightforward. The PicoSure laser is targeted at the tattooed microbladed area. Its powerful pulses break down the tattoo ink pigment into minuscule particles, which are naturally eliminated by your body over time.

Advantages of Laser Removal

  • Precision: Laser removal offers precise targeting, making it effective at breaking up embedded pigment while minimizing damage to surrounding tissue.
  • Effectiveness: Laser offers more precision and depth control, making it more effective at breaking up embedded pigment. Results are cleaner and more uniform, making laser a better option for clients seeking full removal or a clean slate for rework.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Laser removal often requires fewer sessions overall, which often makes it more cost-effective despite the higher per-session price.

Considerations for Laser Removal

  • Multiple Sessions: Laser tattoo removal typically requires multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart to achieve desired results. The more times you have gone over your microblading the more layers you have resulting in more laser treatments. Typically it takes between 5-10 sessions to see removal results.
  • Side Effects: While generally safe, there is a risk of temporary discomfort, redness, and swelling.
  • Pigment Changes: Microblading is pigment it isn't ink so it has a tendency to turn a reddish / pinkish colour after the laser.
  • Hair Color: Your eyebrow hair will not fall out, it may turn a lighter shade but can be redyed 24 hrs after the procedure.
  • Color Sensitivity: Lasers are color blind and can’t remove tattoos that have colors like red, orange, and yellow in them. However, white tattoos will turn black when hit with a laser beam.

Laser Options

Not all lasers are the same. Some lasers work better than others to remove colors from tattoos. One of the more notable revelations after the development of high powered Picosecond Nd:YAG lasers such as the Wontech PicoCare (450ps Nd:YAG) and PicoCare Majesty (250ps Nd:YAG), both available at our Center, was how effective these lasers were at removing yellow ink in both decorative tattoos as well as microblading and other forms of permanent makeup. Due to this, our patients rarely encounter the feared ‘yellow brow’ as the PicoSecond 532nm wavelength is highly effective at treating both red and yellow pigments.

Pre and Post-Treatment

Prior to the treatment, a consultation is necessary to discuss your specific needs and goals and a topical anesthetic cream is applied for comfort. During the procedure, we cool the area while protective eyewear is provided. The PicoSure laser treatment itself is relatively swift and is completed in just a few minutes, and most people compare the sensation to a rubber band snapping against their skin.

Recovery time depends on the wavelength used, but typically involves application of aquaphor or vaseline to the treated area several times per day for 5-7 days, after which makeup can be applied to the area if desired.

Saline Tattoo Removal: A Gradual Approach

Saline tattoo removal is a manual technique that offers a non-invasive alternative for individuals seeking a more gradual approach to tattoo removal or those with sensitive skin. This method involves using a specialized saline solution to lift the pigment from the skin gradually.

How Saline Removal Works

Some cosmetic tattoo artists provide saline tattoo removal. They use tattooing techniques, but instead of ink in the needle, they use saline tattoo removal liquid. Salt is the active ingredient in saline tattoo removal products. Salt is effective because it creates an imbalance of salt in the tissue. Your body sends fluid to push the salt out and rebalance its natural sodium levels. The scientific term is called osmosis. The area forms a scab and when the scab falls off, the top layer of ink goes with it. The area will be numbed with lidocaine before the removal procedure begins.

Saline can be injected or microbladed into the skin to remove the pigments. Re-microlading with saline essentially opens the skin and allows the saline solution to seep into the epidermis. This method theoretically removes the tattoo pigment, but can also damage the skin.

Advantages of Saline Removal

  • Effectiveness with All Colors: Saline tattoo removal is effective with all colors. Eyebrow colors are usually some version of brown.
  • Suitable for Smaller Tattoos: It’s most effective when the tattoo is smaller than the palm of your hand.

Disadvantages of Saline Removal

  • Less Predictable Results: Saline removal may be useful in special cases (e.g., color correction, contraindications for laser, client preference), but it tends to fade pigment less predictably and involves more visible scabbing. Saline removal may leave behind more residual pigment but can be gentler on the skin and better suited for color correction.
  • More Visible Scabbing: Saline removal involves more visible scabbing.
  • Skin Damage: Some disadvantages of using saline removal methods are, the solution can cause damage to the skin, it could burn the skin, cause scarification, or hypo/hyperpigmentation which could cause a skin bleach effect or darker pigmentation to form.
  • Limited Effectiveness: Using saline solution may work for a little bit but it wont remove all the pigment.

Li-FT Non-Laser Tattoo Lightening

LI-FT Non-Laser Tattoo Lightening is a saline based solution that is used to lighten and erase permanent makeup tattoos safely and without the use of a laser. Anyone who wants to get rid of undesirable microblading, bad eyebrow tattoos, old permanent makeup and small tattoos can benefit from saline removal but it may take some time and patience. With darker colors and shadows it is particularly effective (because dark colors have smaller molecules) these issues are usually resolved in one or two sessions.

Emergency Saline Removal

A trained professional can do emergency saline removal/lightening on a fresh tattoo within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. At About Face and Body, our clients use an additional step. We created a salt ointment that clients apply at home during the first three to four days of healing. We offer emergency saline tattoo removal if you are unhappy with your new Microbladed brows or tattoo. This service is available within 24-48 hours after receiving the tattoo.

Other Tattoo Removal Methods

While laser and saline removal are the most common and effective methods, other options exist, though they may come with significant drawbacks:

  1. Surgical Removal: This involves cutting away the tattooed skin and stitching the wound closed. It is effective but invasive, painful, and costly, with insurance unlikely to cover the expense.
  2. Dermabrasion: This method removes tattoos by sanding down the skin. While effective, it is very painful, and the wounds take longer to heal than laser removal, requiring 10-14 days. Only physicians trained in the proper technique should perform dermabrasion.
  3. Chemical Peels: A specialist applies acid to the tattoo area to make it peel off. It might be a little painful, but doesn’t need an anesthetic. Because the skin will be open after the procedure, risks include scarring and infection. You will need to clean it every day with soap and water, apply antibiotic ointment, and wrap the area until it heals. Healing should take five to seven days. Wait to use chemical peels until the tattoo has healed for at least eight weeks.
  4. DIY Methods: People often try to remove their old tattoos with products like lemon juice, vinegar, rubbing alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide. These household products are not very effective and can cause scarring because tattoo ink is in the dermis, below the top layer of our skin.

Methods to Avoid

  1. Neglecting Aftercare: Much like receiving a regular tattoo, aftercare protocols are important to follow so that the tattoo can heal properly. Avoiding the recommended aftercare could result in faded or patchy microbladed eyebrows.
  2. DIY Scrubs: Social media might advocate for salt and lemon DIY scrubs, and saline microblading removal but in the end, you’ll be left with scar tissue and misshaped tattoo ink. Tattoo ink lives in the epidermis, scrubbing the dermis will only result in scar tissue development and maybe a faded tattoo look from the tissue build-up. Leave the DIY to home improvements and avoid eyebrow tattoo removal DIY methods.
  3. Topical Creams: Topical creams are also not recommended because again, they will damage the dermis (top barrier) of your skin and can not penetrate the epidermis. Tattoo removal creams can also burn the skin and cause scarification or hypo/hyperpigmentation (bleaching or darkening of the skin pigmentation).

The Importance of Professional Consultation

The final result of tattoo removal/lightening depends on how deep the ink is in your skin. The deeper the ink, the harder it will be to remove. Always consult a professional, no matter what method you choose. Consulting with a qualified dermatologist or tattoo removal specialist is key to developing a personalized treatment plan tailored to achieve optimal results while minimizing the risk of complications.

Factors Affecting Removal

Several factors influence the success and duration of microblading removal:

  • Ink Saturation: Microblading can be removed. The process may require 1-4 sessions and in some cases more, it depends on how saturated with ink or pigment the area is and how many times the area has been tattooed.
  • Ink Depth: The deeper the ink, the harder it will be to remove.
  • Ink Colors: With darker colors and shadows it is particularly effective (because dark colors have smaller molecules) these issues are usually resolved in one or two sessions.

The Cost of Microblading Removal

The cost of microblading removal varies depending on the method used and the number of sessions required. Laser removal often has a higher per-session price but may require fewer sessions overall, making it cost-effective in the long run. Some studios offer flat per-session rates with optional pre-paid discounts.
