Taming the Frizz: A Comprehensive Guide to Caring for Wavy, Medium, and Curly Hair
Do you struggle with frizzy, undefined waves? Does humidity turn your hair into a poofy mess? You're not alone! Many people with wavy hair face these challenges. The key to unlocking your hair's potential lies in understanding your hair type, choosing the right products, and adopting a tailored care routine.
Understanding Your Wavy Hair
To effectively care for your wavy hair, it's essential to understand its characteristics. Hair types are generally categorized into four main types, with various subtypes. Wavy hair falls under Type 2, which is further divided into 2A, 2B, and 2C.
- 2A Hair: This type has a very fine, loose tousled texture with a slight wave that easily loses shape and can appear almost straight. Lightweight products are ideal for 2A hair to avoid weighing it down.
- 2B Hair: 2B hair features a more defined "S" shape. While still relatively straight at the roots, the waves are more pronounced and maintain their shape better than 2A hair.
- 2C Hair: This type has a very tight "S" shape, with some strands even forming loose corkscrews when styled.
Beyond hair type, it's crucial to determine your hair's porosity, which refers to its ability to absorb and retain moisture.
- High Porosity: Hair with high porosity has open cuticles, allowing moisture to be absorbed quickly but also lost easily.
- Medium Porosity: This hair type has slightly open cuticles, allowing moisture to enter relatively easily without escaping too quickly.
- Low Porosity: Hair with low porosity has tightly closed cuticles, making it difficult for moisture to penetrate.
The Frizz Factor: Why Wavy Hair Gets Frizzy
One of the biggest challenges for wavy hair is frizz. Its natural texture makes it prone to frizz, even with minimal moisture in the air. Frizz is primarily caused by a lack of moisture, leading to cuticle damage. When hair lacks moisture, it seeks it from the environment, resulting in frizz, especially in humid conditions.
Other factors that contribute to frizz include:

- Heat Styling: Blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons can strip hair of its natural moisture, leading to frizz.
- Harsh Shampoos: Shampoos containing SLS/SLES sulfates can be too harsh and strip the hair of its natural oils, causing dryness and frizz.
- Silicones: While silicones may temporarily smooth the hair, they can build up over time, repelling moisture and exacerbating dryness.
- Rough Towel Drying: Using a regular terrycloth towel can create friction, leading to frizz and damage.
- Over-brushing: Excessive brushing can disrupt the hair's natural curl pattern and cause frizz and breakage.
Building Your Wavy Hair Care Routine
1. Gentle Cleansing
- Sulfate-Free Shampoos: Opt for sulfate-free shampoos to cleanse hair without stripping its natural oils.
- Co-washing: Consider incorporating a co-wash (conditioner wash) into your routine to gently cleanse and moisturize hair.
- Washing Frequency: Avoid washing your hair every day, as frequent washing can strip away natural oils and lead to frizz. Janine Jarmon recommends washing hers once a week. Rinse and condition on other days.
2. Hydration is Key
- Conditioner: Always use a conditioning product after shampooing to replenish moisture.
- Deep Conditioning: Deep condition your hair once a week to maintain moisture levels. Lighter formulas are recommended to avoid weighing down wavy hair.
- Leave-In Conditioner: Follow up your shower with a nourishing leave-in product to provide continuous hydration. Use 3-4 pumps of leave-in conditioner (and comb it through) to keep hair moisturized and defined before going in with more products.
3. Drying with Care
- Microfiber Towel or T-shirt: Instead of a terrycloth towel, use a microfiber towel or a cotton T-shirt to gently squeeze out excess water.
- Air Drying: Give air-drying a shot whenever possible.
- Diffusing: If you use a blow dryer, attach a diffuser to minimize frizz and enhance waves. A diffuser will reduce the force of air coming through your blow dryer so that your hair isn’t getting roughed up as much.
4. Styling Strategies
- Product Selection: Choose lightweight styling products specifically designed for wavy hair. Avoid heavy creams and gels that can weigh down your waves.
- Application Technique: Apply styling products to soaking-wet hair. Scrunch your hair to encourage wave formation.
- Minimalism: To avoid build-up, try to use only one styler in your routine.
- Scrunching: Twisting or scrunching your waves while your hair is still damp can also help.
- Plopping: Try the "plopping" technique: After you shower, take a T-shirt or thin microfiber towel and lay it in front of you on a flat surface. Lean over and position your head on top of the shirt/towel, with all of your hair on top of your head. Pull the shirt/towel around your head and secure at the nape of your neck. Go about your business, allowing your hair to “set” like this for at least 30 minutes.
- Braiding: Try sleeping in braids to set your waves into a more defined curl pattern. Start with our Miracle Styling Potion, coating hair from roots to tips. Then, divide your hair into two sections and braid each side, securing with a small elastic.
- Sculpted Look: Janine Jarmon taught how to do the “sculpted look” which is basically just bigger curls by using a brush to control the ringlets. You have to put it into sections and just work with one strand at a time. What you do is feed strands of hair through the brush so it twirls and also perfectly detangles it. The key is to not touch the sculpted curls AT ALL. You must just sit and wait for them to air dry so I picked up a gripping new thriller.
- Perfect your blow-dry technique: Grab a round brush and work section by section, pulling hair tight against it and aiming the dryer down your strands. You should feel tension as you’re doing so (but not too much).
- Use a flat iron to smooth hair that’s still a bit wavy: make sure the heat isn’t too high! If you have fine or thin hair, set the temperature to around 300 degrees F. Thicker or coarser hair can usually handle up to 400 degrees F.
5. Protecting Your Waves
- Satin Pillowcase or Bonnet: Sleep on a satin pillowcase or use a satin bonnet to reduce friction and prevent frizz.
- Refreshing: Refresh your waves daily with a light liquid gel or mousse to maintain their shape and definition. Mix a leave-in conditioner with water and lightly spritz it onto your hair,” he says. “Then, do a quick diffuse to redefine your waves.”
- Heat Protection: Always use a heat protectant before using any heat styling tools.
