DIY Hair Mask Recipes: Natural Solutions for Every Hair Type

We spend a small fortune on our hair, but a few days in the sun can create a downhill spiral with all the sweat, salt, and sand. Fortunately, you can create your own DIY hair masks using healthy ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. Hair masks are quick yet highly potent, effective ways to provide your hair with tons of health benefits in less than 20 minutes. Think of hair masks like high powered hair conditioners, giving your hair benefits like softening and hydrating, a boost to grow, adding shine, and even fighting off infections.

Make the switch to natural hair care products that are nourishing and don’t strip your hair’s natural oils. And if you’re swimming in a pool, remember to wet your hair before diving in. Then aim for a weekly homemade hair treatment to address your hair issue: Dry? Frizzy? Split ends? Oily? Don’t worry-there’s a mask for that. While some hair salons offer expensive hair treatments that yield similar results, we've decided to go straight to Mother Nature for our hair masks. This collection of hair masks only require a few, all-natural ingredients each, which can all be found in your fridge or cupboard and come straight from the Earth.

Here’s a shopping list of the all-natural ingredients that will be included in the concoctions we’re going to share with you.

Luxe Hair Mask Base: A Customizable Foundation

The Luxe Hair Mask Base makes creating your own hair mask easy! It was formulated by Marie of Humblebee and Me. In this video, Marie shows you how to customize the base depending on your hair type. For dry hair, we recommend adding an oil-based extract, while fine/oily hair may prefer a water-based extract. All three recipes produce a batch of 100 grams, which is the perfect amount to test. In the "Instruction" tab, you'll find the three recipes for dry, oily/fine, and curly hair types. Then, pick out how you'd like to package your hair mask! We have plenty of packaging options to choose from.

Equipment Prep: Disinfect your utensils by dipping them in a 5% bleach water solution and allowing to dry. This includes mixing containers, your stick blender, and any spoons or spatulas that may come in contact with your hair mask.

Note: You can mix ingredients into the Luxe Hair Mask Base unheated, or you can gently heat the base to create a thinner texture. The thinner texture can make incorporating certain ingredients easier. Package hair mask in the packaging of your choice. To use, apply to clean, wet hair in the shower for 5-10 minutes and rinse out. For extremely dry hair, you can use the mask as a treatment mask - apply to dry hair and wrap in a warm towel for 15-20 minutes.

DIY Hair Mask Recipes for Specific Hair Concerns

For Dry Hair and Scalp: Coconut Oil Mask

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize-which will help prevent split ends, frizz, and breakage. If your regular conditioner isn't cutting it, opt for an intensive overnight treatment with coconut oil. "It can penetrate the hair shaft" to repair hair.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil

Directions:

Before bed, warm coconut oil in the microwave, then massage into damp hair, avoiding the roots. (Tie strands into a bun and/or cover with a shower cap or hair wrap if desired.) Shampoo in the morning.

For Dry, Damaged Hair: Avocado, Honey, and Olive Oil Mask

Various factors can cause strand damage: styling tool overuse, hair color, chemical treatments, and more. Help counteract it with an avocado and olive oil hair mask. "Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, this treatment helps add shine". An avocado-based mask also "helps to rejuvenate and moisturize the scalp".

Ingredients:

  • Half an avocado
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 3 drops essential oil of choice

Directions:

Stir ingredients together until fully combined, then apply to wet hair with your fingertips, starting at the bottom and working your way up. Warren suggests wrapping your hair into a bun and covering with a shower cap. To help activate the ingredients, blow dry your shower cap-covered hair for 10 minutes. Let it sit for another 20 minutes, then shampoo. A DYI Avocado Banana Hair Mask offers a variety of healthy benefits that earn it the number one spot on our list. Not only is it incredibly refreshing and hydrating for your hair, but it can also strengthen your strands and give them a beautiful, natural shine. Avocados, bananas and eggs are well-known for their nourishing and hydrating effects on hair.

For Frizzy Hair: Castor Oil Mask

Frizz can be caused by damage, the environment or both-and some types of hair are inherently more prone to it. Keep fuzz at bay by laying down and sealing hair's cuticle, or outer layer, with an emollient ingredient like castor oil, which "acts as a protectant and can help fortify strands". Derived from the castor plant's seeds and "comprised mainly of the fatty acid ricinoleic acid, it coats and conditions to improve smoothness".

Ingredients:

  • Castor oil

Directions:

Rub a dab of castor oil between hands and glide a very thin layer over frizz-prone areas on dry hair.

For Hair Growth: Rosemary and Castor Oils Mask

"Try a blend of castor oil and rosemary oil-I like the combination of these two ingredients for hair growth".

Ingredients:

  • Equal amounts of rosemary oil and castor oil

Directions:

Blend these two ingredients together and apply to dry hair as a scalp oil and massage in. Use a scalp massager to stimulate the scalp and open the hair cuticle to invigorate growth.

Note: The effects of this hair mask aren’t proven, and the Beauty Lab recommends seeking out FDA-approved drugs like minoxidil for hair growth.

For Curly Hair: Rice and Avocado Mask

Curly hair is prone to dryness and damage and can always use a little extra hydration. Dr. Garshick suggests using a mask that has rice water, "as it contains inositol which helps to repair damaged hair and in doing so, can help to retain curls." The avocado in the mask adds instant nourishment.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 avocado

Directions:

Soak the rice in water, then use a sieve to eliminate the rice grains from the water. Mash the avocado then add to rice water. Apply to hair and rinse after 20-25 minutes.

For Bleached or Colored Hair: Honey, Banana, and Coconut Oil Mask

Color-treated hair can always use more hydration, especially bleached strands. "Make sure to use ingredients that won't compromise the color". "This mask helps to enhance moisture without affecting your shade".

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 peeled banana
  • 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil

Directions:

Blend ingredients together and then apply to hair for 15 minutes and rinse.

For Thin Hair: Banana, Honey, Egg, and Olive Oil Mask

A protein treatment can help plump strands, whether they are naturally fine or losing fullness. Make a banana protein smoothie for hair with amino acid-rich bananas and eggs. "Results are immediate and will last until your next shampoo".

Ingredients:

  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2 peeled ripe bananas
  • 2-3 tablespoons of honey
  • Half a cup of conditioner
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

Directions:

Blend all ingredients until pureed. Fully coat hair with the treatment, leave on for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse with cool water.

For Dandruff: Coconut Oil, Sugar, and Essential Oil Mask

If flakes start to appear on your scalp when the temperature is dropping, it may be because the heat in your home is higher and is drying out your skin. Your scalp is no exception. This exfoliating treatment helps remove flakes and (bonus!) doubles as a great facial scrub. The coconut oil is rich in fatty acids and has anti-inflammatory benefits; the peppermint oil helps promote circulation to the scalp; and tea tree oil is anti-fungal, antimicrobial, and antibacterial.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of raw unrefined coconut oil
  • 4 teaspoons of raw sugar
  • 5 drops of peppermint oil
  • 2 drops of tea tree oil

Directions:

In a small bowl, mix ingredients together. Using your fingers or a hair color brush, apply the mixture directly to two-inch sections of clean, damp hair in the shower. Once evenly applied, gently massage for 1-3 minutes and then clip your hair up and let it sit for the duration of your shower.

For Dry Scalp: Almond Oil, Mayo, and Yogurt Mask

"If you suffer from dry scalp, almond or coconut oil is a key ingredient as either can help to keep the skin barrier strong and hydrated". "People often mix with mayonnaise and yogurt or honey as each have anti-inflammatory properties." Bonus: yogurt can also reel in flyaways.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp almond oil (or sub in coconut oil)
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp yogurt (or sub 1 tsp honey)

Directions:

Mix all ingredients well in a bowl and apply to the scalp. Leave for 15-30 minutes and rinse out.

For Oily Hair: Egg White and Lemon Hair Mask

If you are prone to greasy hair, an egg mask can work wonders. Stick with just the whites, which have protein enzymes that help remove excess oil. Lemon is best for those with an oily scalp, as lemon juice has the capabilities of absorbing excess oil and grease in the scalp. Lemon is high in Vitamin C, which leads to strong hair, and its acidic nature will help clean your hair from any deposited products and dust. Lemon also contains a compound called Limonene, which adds bounce and shine to dull, lifeless hair. Lemon juice is also great for fighting Dandruff, as it has anti-fungal properties.

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg white
  • Juice from half a lemon

Directions:

Smooth over hair from roots to ends and leave on for 30 minutes to an hour-longer is better. Rinse with lukewarm water, not hot!

For Buildup: Baking Soda Mask

Between haircare and styling products, it's easy to accumulate layers of residue. Buildup can lead to strands that look and feel greasy along with flatness and even dandruff-like flakes. Cut through excess oil and buildup with this clarifying "baking soda power cleanse".

Ingredients:

  • Half a cup of shampoo
  • 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda

Directions:

Combine shampoo with baking soda, stir well, and pour over wet hair. Gently massage the mixture into the scalp and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

For Shiny Hair: Honey, ACV, and Coconut Oil Mask

Keeping hair moisturized and healthy always makes your hair look better. When strands start to lose their luster, apply a treatment made with apple cider vinegar, which clarifies and smooths hair's outer layer, to boost shine. An apple cider vinegar rinse smoothes out the hair cuticle, creating lots of shine, and balances the pH of your scalp and hair.

Ingredients:

  • One tablespoon of raw honey
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Coconut oil (adjust the amount but keep equal parts if you have really long or thick hair)

Directions:

Work the blend through damp hair and leave on for at least 20 minutes, then shampoo it out. It’s great for all hair types and helps lock in color as well.

For Irritated Scalp: Green Tea and Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

While green tea has a laundry list of health benefits, you can also add "scalp soother" to the list. A tonic that combines antioxidant green tea and peppermint oil can help soothe dry, irritated scalp skin. Similar to how they benefit the skin, the caffeine, antioxidants, and catechins found in green tea encourage blood flow and circulation to hair follicles, reduce inflammation, and help to protect hair from sun damage. Apple cider vinegar is known for having antibacterial and antifungal properties which help with flaky and itchy scalps. It also cleanses the hair without stripping natural oils and helps retain the moisture in your hair for better conditioning.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of green tea
  • 2 drops of peppermint oil
  • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar

Directions:

Mix well, massage into scalp, and let sit for at least five minutes before rinsing.

For Flat Hair: Oats, Almond Oil, and Milk Mask

Give lifeless strands an energizing boost with a protein-rich oatmeal, milk, and almond oil hair treatment. Apply to damp (not soaking wet) hair for the best results.

Ingredients:

  • Half a cup of oats
  • 2 tablespoons of almond oil
  • Half a cup of milk

Directions:

Mix ingredients well. Smooth the mask all over hair and leave it on for 20 to 40 minutes, then shampoo.

For Breakage and Split Ends: Coconut, Argan and Almond Oils Mask

"My favorite DIY mask is using three superfood oils to deeply heal the hair after it’s bleached or has a lot of breakage". Coconut oil can help hair grow healthier, thicker, and longer, thanks to the vitamins and fatty acids that nourish the scalp. It also smooths the cuticle on split ends, controls frizz in humid weather, and helps heal breakage. Argan oil is a top moisturizer due to its fatty acids and vitamin E and helps to improve elasticity, reduce breakage, and add shine. Almond oil is a softening agent for the hair follicles and is also anti-inflammatory. It’s nourishing, locks in moisture, and keeps hair and scalp hydrated, preventing dryness and flakiness.

Ingredients:

  • 1-3 tablespoons of coconut, argan, and almond oils (equal amounts of each)

Directions:

Combine equal parts of the oils in a small bowl. Adjust the quantity based on your hair length and thickness. Apply the oil mixture to dry hair so the hair can absorb the treatment to its maximum. Start from the scalp and work your way to the ends, massaging it gently into your scalp and hair. Note: You can also apply it to damp hair after washing if you are worried that the mask will be too heavy for your hair. Leave the oil mixture on your hair for at least 15-20 minutes. Wash your hair thoroughly with a gentle shampoo to remove the oil. You may need to shampoo twice to ensure all the oil is washed out.

Additional DIY Hair Mask Recipes

  1. Salt and Oil Scalp Scrub: Salt and oil combine in a scalp scrub to stimulate hair growth and remove any dandruff or dry flakes without drying out the scalp. Mix salt, lemon juice, and oil together, then wet the hair and massage it into your scalp for several minutes.
  2. Yogurt and Olive Oil Mask: To keep your hair moisturized and healthy, up your intake of protein and healthy fats, brush gently with natural hair tools, and avoid hot styling tools when possible. Adding oil to the hair not only moisturizes, but it forms a layer that coats and protects it against environmental damage. Mix the yogurt with olive oil and stir together.
  3. Honey Hair Mask: A honey hair mask is extra conditioning and super hydrating. Raw honey is naturally moisturizing, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory, as well as conducive to healing.
  4. Avocado and Almond Oil Mask: Hair is made of protein, and oils like avocado and almond have natural proteins that help strengthen the hair. Combine the ingredients and heat the mixture in the microwave for a few seconds until warm enough to spread easily. Let it cool a bit. Massage the mixture into your scalp, then cover with a shower cap for 30 minutes to an hour.
  5. Coconut Milk Mask: Coconut milk not only helps detangle unruly hair, but it also boosts moisture from scalp to ends. Whisk 1 egg in a bowl and add coconut milk and extra-virgin olive oil; mix well. Pour some of the mixture over your scalp and massage, then pour the rest onto your hair, concentrating on the ends.
  6. Green Tea Mask: Green tea has more antioxidants than black tea due to its minimal processing, making it an ideal choice for hair stimulation. Whisk the egg and combine with the coconut oil and matcha powder. Using a comb, part your hair and apply to the roots, slowly working your way over the entire scalp. Leave on for 30 minutes before shampooing.
  7. Apple Cider Vinegar Mask: This mask is for hair that tends to get greasy fast. Combine the ingredients and apply the liquid to your scalp after shampooing. I find it easier to bend my head upside down and pour the liquid over it that way, so it doesn’t drip down my back. Work it through your damp hair, then put on a shower cap. Keep the mask on for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse with warm water.
  8. Banana and Honey Mask: If your summer looks anything like mine, your hair is in a battle against chlorine, sun, and salt. In a blender, combine the banana and honey, blending until all the banana pieces are pureed, and you are left with a smooth mixture. Apply the mask to your hair, taking extra time to make sure you saturate the ends. The shower cap is optional, but heat allows for extra penetration, and a shower cap is great for keeping the heat in.
  9. Olive Oil and Egg Hair Treatments: Olive Oil and Egg Hair treatments are packed with moisturizing and follicle-strengthening nutrients. Mix the ingredients in a small bowl with a hand mixer until well blended. This treatment allows you to mix and match ingredients as preferred.
  10. Yogurt and Honey Hair Treatments: Yogurt and honey are unbeatable as DIY deep conditioning hair treatments. This treatment can be used once per week to soften and shine your hair. If you have long hair, you may want to double the batch. You can also add a tablespoon of lemon to the mixture for a fragrant aroma and to stimulate hair growth.
  11. Brown Sugar and Olive Oil Hair Treatment: Brown sugar and olive oil are the perfect combination if you’re looking for an exfoliating and moisturizing hair treatment. The brown sugar removes the buildup of sebum, sweat and other particles from the hair while the olive oil restores moisture and shine.
  12. Coconut Oil and Honey Hair Mask: Coconuts truly seem to be the magical ingredient for your hair. Coconut Oil can be used for hair and skin, is a healthy fat for cooking, aids in digestion, supports the body's natural hormones…the benefits of Coconut Oil are endless! Coconut Oil for hair keeps it moist and soft and prevents hair breakage because of its high moisture retaining capabilities. Since Coconut Oil is loaded with fatty acids, it penetrates the hair more deeply than regular conditioners, leading to beautiful soft, silky, shiny hair. The benefits of honey are endless! First, honey is great for retaining moisture in your hair as it is a natural humectant. This means that it sucks moisture into the hair and prevents it from escaping.
    1. Need extra instructions on how to make this Coconut Oil and honey hair mask at home?
  13. Cinnamon Hair Mask: Cinnamon has antimicrobial properties that help your hair grow, helps with dandruff, hair loss, and strengthens your hair follicles as well. When applied to your hair, cinnamon stimulates circulation to the scalp, improving blood flow to the hair follicles, and leading to stimulated hair growth. If you're looking for longer hair, this is the hair mask for you.
    1. Use your fingertips to massage the product into your scalp.
  14. Egg and Lemon Hair Mask: Eggs are rich in Vitamins A, D, and E, proteins and fatty acids, which help retain the luster and shine in your hair. As your hair is mostly made of protein, this extra boost to the hair leaves it feeling healthy and restored.
    1. Crack an egg, and be sure to only use the egg white.
    2. Squeeze one half of a lemon into a mixing bowl.
    3. Mix the egg white and lemon juice together until you have a smooth consistency.
    4. Apply to damp hair from top to bottom.
    5. Tie hair up and cover with a shower cap
    6. Of course, the best way to get rid of oily hair is through preventative measures.
  15. Coconut Milk Hair Mask: Surprise! Coconut milk is a natural hair repairing remedy. It's no surprise, since coconut milk is made from the healthy, white flesh of coconuts. Are you suffering from hair loss? If so, coconut milk is loaded with vitamins like Niacin and Folate, which stimulates circulation in the scalp, promoting hair growth. Do you have dry hair?
  16. Brown Sugar and Olive Oil Hair Mask: Brown sugar is a great exfoliant for the hair that helps get rid of those dead skin cells from your scalp and any other leftover residue buildup. Extra virgin olive oil has always been used as a natural conditioner to treat dry hair. It also produces soft and shiny hair by locking in the moisture and preventing dryness of the scalp. Do you scratch your head a lot? Do you have issues with dandruff and dry hair? This mask is going to be your best bet to help remedy those issues.
  17. Banana Hair Mask: We go bananas for bananas in hair mask recipes! Bananas are secret wonders for hair conditioning. This recipe kind of sounds like we’re making a parfait, but we promise that yogurt has incredible benefits for your frizzy hair.
    1. Boom! Frizz-be-gone!
  18. Avocado Hair Mask: Ok, just a fair warning- this one might make you look like you have guacamole on your head, but we promise it’s worth it. Ever wonder why health nuts tout avocados as an essential ingredient to a well-balanced meal?
  19. Strawberry Hair Mask: This hair mask recipe is great to achieve overall hair health, and one of our particular favorites because the strawberries make it smell so delicious. Strawberries are full of Vitamin C, which helps your body create collagen, an important part of the hair's structure.
  20. Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Mask: Since apple cider vinegar is slightly acidic, when you dilute it with water, it works amazingly to balance the pH level of your scalp and cure any ailments. Exposing your hair to this acidic apple cider vinegar also hardens the outside of the hair, which results in hair that shines, is smooth and silky, and less prone to tangling. Consider doing an ACV hair rinse to give your hair a bit of a refresh. There you have it! As you can see, you don't have to go far or spend a fortune when it comes to hair masks.
