Eyebrow Slit Tutorial: A Comprehensive Guide to Edgy Brow Styling

Eyebrows-we pluck them, wax them, shave them… but how about putting a slit in them? Welcome to the edgy world of eyebrow slits, a fashion-forward trend that’s been catching the eyes of beauty enthusiasts and celebrities alike. Eyebrow slits became a trend in the 90s and are still being rocked by people today-in fact, they’re super trendy! If you’ve been searching for a unique way to spice up your brows, look no further.

What are Eyebrow Slits?

Eyebrow slits are all about self-expression. They’ve been around for eons, tracing their roots back to the ancient cultures of Egypt, Asia, and the Middle East, and have been used to express individuality in myriad ways. They offer a unique way to alter your appearance without the permanence of a tattoo for instance. They’re all about adding an edgy twist to your usual eyebrow shape, by shaving or using makeup to create a split in the brow hair, giving a striped effect. Usually, people will put 1-3 slits in each eyebrow.

Why Choose Eyebrow Slits?

What makes eyebrow slits so appealing? Another advantage of eyebrow slits is their versatility. Whether you’re going for a single slit in one eyebrow or multiple slits for a more dramatic effect, this trend is all about customization and self-expression. The slit in the eyebrow can symbolize gender identity, individuality, and a challenge to conventional beauty standards.

Tools You'll Need

Before we begin, let’s discuss the right tools. Precision is key when creating eyebrow slits, and the right tools can help you achieve that.

  • Razor or Clippers: A slim electric razor is perfect for creating clean, straight lines and getting the exact width you want for the eyebrow slit. Beyond the razor method, you can also use clippers or tweezers, with the latter being my professional recommendation.
  • Tape: Get some scotch tape. The tape serves as a guide, helping you to make precise and clean cuts, thereby avoiding any mistakes or uneven slits.
  • White Eyeliner: Draw 2 vertical lines near the tail of your eyebrow using white eyeliner.
  • Concealer: Employ a concealer to mark the edge slits, thus creating clean vertical lines. The concealer not only helps create sharp edge slits but when blended correctly, it makes the eyebrow slit look intentional and on point.
  • Tweezers: Stand close to a mirror and find any hairs that weren’t shaved off. Tweeze the remaining hairs that the razor didn’t shave off.
  • Eyebrow Pencil: For a finishing touch, use an eyebrow pencil to enhance the shape and definition of your brows.
  • Eyebrow Powder: First, use a spoolie or a brow comb to shape your eyebrows and tame unruly hairs. Then, use an angled brush and eyebrow powder that matches your natural hair color to fill in your eyebrows and make them look thicker.
  • Detailing Brush: Select a small, flat brush from your makeup kit and dip it into the same color concealer you used around your brows. Cover the tip of the detailing brush in the concealer.
  • Translucent Powder: Use a powder brush to apply a light dusting of translucent powder over your eyebrow slit and around the eyebrows.

Method 1: Creating Eyebrow Slits with a Razor

Here’s how to create an eyebrow slit using tape to mark your slit location.

  1. Decide on the Placement: First, decide whether you want 1 or 2 eyebrow slits and where you want them to go.
  2. Mark the Slit Location: Draw 2 vertical lines near the tail of your eyebrow using white eyeliner.
  3. Apply Tape: Place a piece of tape next to the line you’ve marked. Get some scotch tape and place it next to the white line you just drew. Use the straight edge of the tape and line it up to the edge of the white eyeliner. Place another piece of tape next to your second white line. Make sure to leave a gap in the middle. This is where your eyebrow slit will go. The tape really helps.
  4. Shave the Hair: Hold your razor perpendicular to your skin. Then, carefully move the eyebrow razor down against the grain of your eyebrow hair, shaving the space between both pieces of tape. Only move vertically. Make sure to do this slowly and lightly, because you don’t want to peel the tape away from your eyebrow.
  5. Remove Tape and Clean: Slowly remove the tape, so you don’t pull out any eyebrow hair. Then, wipe away the white eyeliner with your finger and some water to reveal the final product.
  6. Tweeze Stray Hairs: Stand close to a mirror and find any hairs that weren’t shaved off.
  7. Repeat if Desired: If you only want one eyebrow slit, you can stop here. Repeat the steps on other parts of your eyebrow (if desired).

Method 2: Faking an Eyebrow Slit with Concealer

Use concealer to fake an eyebrow slit.

  1. Fill in Eyebrows: First, use a spoolie or a brow comb to shape your eyebrows and tame unruly hairs. Then, use an angled brush and eyebrow powder that matches your natural hair color to fill in your eyebrows and make them look thicker.
  2. Apply Concealer Around Eyebrows: Choose a concealer that matches your skin tone and apply it around the edges of your eyebrows.
  3. Conceal the Slit: Dip a small, flat brush into your concealer. Select a small, flat brush from your makeup kit and dip it into the same color concealer you used around your brows. Cover the tip of the detailing brush in the concealer.
  4. Draw the Slit: Choose where you want to create the slits and dab the flat concealer brush directly onto your eyebrows in a vertical, 60-degree angle line.
  5. Let it Dry: Let the concealer dry for 5 minutes. Fan down the wet concealer with your hands to speed up the drying process. Don’t move on to the next step until the concealer has dried.
  6. Apply Translucent Powder: Use a powder brush to apply a light dusting of translucent powder over your eyebrow slit and around the eyebrows.
  7. Finish Your Makeup: Do the rest of your makeup as you normally would, making sure your foundation blends seamlessly around your brows.

Maintaining Your Eyebrow Slits

Keeping your eyebrow slit looking fresh and clean requires occasional touch-ups.

  1. Re-shave Regularly: Look in the mirror around once a week to check if the hair in your eyebrow slits has started to grow back.
  2. Repeat the Shaving Process: If it has, repeat the process of taping and shaving your eyebrows to create the slits. While you’re maintaining them, you might even add another one!
  3. Use Maintenance Tools: Use tools such as the Touch-Up Eyebrow Razor Dermaplaning Tool, the Hydro Silk Touch-Up Multipurpose Eyebrow Razor, and eyebrow scissors to maintain the look of your eyebrow slit, also known as eyebrow cuts.
  4. Clean and Protect: Remember to clean the area with a gentle makeup remover to get rid of any dirt or oil, and then put a little antibiotic ointment around the eye to prevent any infection from cuts or nicks.

Customizing Your Eyebrow Slits

Having mastered the art of creating an eyebrow slit, you can now explore more creative options.

  • Number and Width: The number and width of your eyebrow slits can dramatically change your look. Whether you prefer something subtle or really bold, the choice is entirely yours.
  • Personal Style: Your personal style plays a significant role in deciding the width of your eyebrow slit. Some might prefer a single, subtle slit, while others may opt for multiple slits for a more dramatic effect. Additionally, the width of an eyebrow slit can alter how people perceive your overall look and style.
  • Hairstyle Integration: Your eyebrow slit shouldn’t stand alone. Instead, it should be integrated with your overall hairstyle for a cohesive look. Hairstyles with short sides, such as buzz cuts or undercuts, can make your eyebrow slits stand out and frame your face beautifully.
  • Adding Color: Looking for a way to make your eyebrow slit pop? Adding color to your eyebrow slit could be as simple as using a clear brow gel, eyebrow powder, or FDA-approved color additives like Silver Nitrate.

Important Considerations

  • Face Shape: Before getting your eyebrow slit, consider your face shape, eyebrow arch, and the placement of the slit to enhance your natural features.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Despite being a fashionable trend, understanding the cultural significance of eyebrow slits and respecting the trend is crucial. However, some people view the eyebrow slit trend as cultural appropriation, as it takes a style from marginalized communities and turns it into a mere fashion trend. Remember, embracing diversity doesn’t mean appropriating the styles and traditions of others without understanding and respect.

Aftercare

Caring for your skin after shaving is crucial to prevent irritation and promote healing.

Common Concerns

  • Does the slit mean anything bad? No.
  • Thin Ends: This technique can make the ends of the eyebrows look very thin because it removes the hairs that typically fill that area.
