How to Cut Your Own Hair: A Comprehensive Guide for Men

Maintaining a suave and well-groomed appearance doesn't always require expensive trips to the barbershop. Whether you're practicing social distancing, trying to save money, or simply prefer the convenience of home grooming, cutting your own hair is an achievable skill with the right tools, some patience, and a bit of practice. This comprehensive guide provides a step-by-step approach to cutting your own hair at home, covering everything from preparation to styling.

Preparing for Your Haircut

Washing and Detangling

Begin by washing your hair to remove any dirt, oil, or styling products. Clean hair is easier to manage and cut evenly. After washing, use a comb to detangle your hair, ensuring it's free of knots and snarls. This will help you achieve a smooth, even cut.

Drying Your Hair

The ideal time to cut your hair is when it's damp but not soaking wet. If your hair is dripping, gently towel dry it until it reaches the desired dampness. Damp hair is more pliable and easier to work with than completely dry hair.

Gathering Your Tools

Before you begin cutting, gather all the necessary tools:

  • Sharp hair-cutting scissors: Invest in a pair of quality hair-cutting scissors for clean, precise cuts. Even high-end kitchen scissors can work in a pinch.
  • Electric clippers: Essential for short styles, fades, and trimming the back and sides.
  • Clipper guards: A variety of guard lengths will allow you to achieve different hair lengths and create fades.
  • A good-quality comb: Use a comb to section, lift, and guide your hair while cutting.
  • Handheld mirror and wall mirror: A combination of mirrors is crucial for seeing the back of your head and ensuring an even cut. A trifold mirror designed specifically for self-cuts can also be helpful.
  • Cape or towel: Protect your clothing from falling hair by draping a cape or towel around your shoulders.
  • Spray bottle with water: Useful for keeping the hair damp, especially if you have straight hair on top.

Setting Up Your Workspace

Choose a well-lit area with a mirror. Good lighting is essential for seeing what you're doing and avoiding mistakes. Ensure you have enough space to move around comfortably and access all your tools.

Sectioning Your Hair

Sectioning your hair is a crucial step for achieving an even and well-defined haircut. Follow these steps to properly section your hair:

  1. Part your hair: Part your hair on one side of your head where you usually part it, aligning with where the side of your hair meets your front hairline.
  2. Clip the top section: Clip the top of your hair up and out of the way. If you don't have clips, you can wet the top section to keep it in place.
  3. Create the side part: Continue the side part around to the back of your head.
  4. Determine the back part: Hold a comb vertically against the back of your head. The point where the top of the comb extends off your head is where you should bring the back part down to. Repeat on the other side of your head.
  5. Complete the U-shape: When finished, you should have a U-shaped part going around the sides and back of your head, dipping down slightly in the back.

Cutting the Back and Sides with Clippers

Clippers are ideal for cutting the back and sides of your hair, especially for beginners or those who want a basic haircut.

Choosing the Right Guard

Start with a larger clipper guard than you think you need. You can always go shorter if necessary. Using clipper guards, start with the lowest guard, working your way up to the largest guard.

Trimming the Sides

  1. Attach a 3-guard: Attach a 3-guard to your clippers.
  2. Clip from bottom to top: Starting on one side of your head, run the clippers from the bottom of your hair to the top where the part is.
  3. Curve the clippers: As you approach the part, curve the clippers out and away from your head to leave the hair at the top of the sides slightly longer.
  4. Repeat: Move the clippers over to the next section of hair and repeat the process.
  5. Work around the head: Continue until you've worked your way from one side of your head around the back to the other side.

Creating a Fade

To create a faded look on the sides and back of your hair, use different clipper guard lengths.

  1. Replace the guard: Replace the 3-guard with a 2-guard.
  2. Clip again: Clip the sides and back of your hair as before, but only go up about 1 inch below the part.
  3. Swap guards again: Swap out the 2-guard with a 1-guard and repeat the process, going up about 1 inch below where you went with the 2-guard.

Tapering the Neckline

Use your clippers or a beard trimmer to cut the hair growing on the nape of your neck. This will create a clean and defined look.

Trimming Around the Edges

To clean up your hairline around your ears and neck, remove the guard from the clippers. Hold the clippers upside down and carefully trim off any excess hair outside of the hairline. Flip the clipper over and hold perpendicular to the skin. Carefully trace along the edge of your hairline. For a skin fade, use an unguarded clipper for the edges.

Cutting the Top with Scissors

Using styling scissors instead of clippers allows for more precise cuts and greater texture on the top of your head.

Preparing the Hair

Unclip the top of your hair and let it down. Wet your hair so it's damp and part it down the middle with your comb.

Establishing a Guideline

  1. Separate a section: Starting on one side, use your comb to separate a thick section at the front of your hair.
  2. Pinch the hair: Pull the section out to the side and pinch it between your fingers a little below where you want to cut it. Your fingers should be vertical.
  3. Cut the ends: Cut the ends off of your hair just above your fingers.

Cutting Subsequent Sections

  1. Separate a new section: Separate another thick section of hair directly behind the first section you cut.
  2. Drag the first section back: Drag the first section back to the new section and pull both sections out to the side.
  3. Use the first section as a guide: Use the first section as a guide and cut the ends of the new section so they're even with the first section.
  4. Repeat: Create a new section behind the first two and repeat the process.
  5. Work on the other side: Once you're finished with one side, do the same thing on the other side.

Evening Out the Top

  1. Comb the hair back: Comb the top of your hair back and lift up one section at a time, starting at the front of your hairline.
  2. Pinch the hair: Pinch the hair between your fingers and check to see if it's all the same length.
  3. Trim any longer hairs: If any of the hair is longer, cut it straight across horizontally to even it out.
  4. Work to the back: Work your way to the back of your hair, ensuring an even length throughout.

Fine-Tuning and Finishing Touches

Checking for Evenness

Use a mirror to check your sides and make sure they are even. Comb your hair straight out and grab a horizontal section from about the same point on each side of your head. Check to see if these sections are the same length. If they are not, trim away any extra length and bumps, taking off small amounts at a time.

Trimming Sideburns

Cut your sideburns to your desired length. You can trim them with either a safety razor or with your clippers. If you want long sideburns, trim from the bottom of your ears. Comb the top of your hair down toward your sides.

Styling Your Hair

After cutting your hair, rinse it in the shower to remove any stray hairs. Towel dry, then part it with a comb and style it as you usually would.

General Tips and Advice

  • Start small: Cut less than you think you need to. You can always cut more later, but you can't uncut hair.
  • Go slow: Cutting your own hair can take several hours, especially if you've never done it before. Take your time and be patient.
  • Use good lighting: Make sure you have adequate lighting so you can see what you're doing.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help: If you're not sure about something, ask a friend or family member for help.
  • Learn from your mistakes: The first few times you cut your own hair, don't cut it quite as short as you normally have it cut. If you make a mistake while cutting, don't worry—you can always go to a hairstylist or salon. Remember that the difference between a bad haircut and a good haircut is just a couple of weeks! It'll grow out.
  • Consider a simple haircut: If you're new to cutting your own hair, pick a simple haircut like a buzz cut. This way, you can use clippers instead of shears (shears are more challenging).
  • Use a belt as a guide: The hardest part of cutting your own hair is getting the back of your head looking right. Use a belt to get a straight line by wrapping the belt around your head and using it as a guide to get the line you want.
  • Watch tutorials: Look for tutorials online to help you, and consider investing in a mirror that can show you the back of your head.
  • Don't expect perfection: Don't expect to get to barber-level quality cutting your own hair. It’s definitely possible to successfully cut your own hair at home, (though it doesn’t hurt to have an artist's hand!).
