How to Safely Dye Eyelashes at Home: A Comprehensive Guide

Many desire dark, full eyelashes, but not everyone is genetically blessed. While mascara offers a temporary solution, it can feel heavy and crusty. Lash tinting provides a longer-lasting alternative, darkening lashes and enhancing their appearance. If you're considering tinting your eyelashes at home, this comprehensive guide will walk you through the process safely and effectively.

Why Tint Your Eyelashes?

For those who prefer a natural look or find mascara cumbersome, lash tinting offers several advantages:

  • Darker Lashes: Tinting darkens the lashes, making them more visible and defined, especially at the tips, which may be lighter.
  • Fuller Appearance: Darkening the lashes can create the illusion of fuller, longer lashes, particularly for the bottom lashes, which can appear translucent.
  • Low Maintenance: Tinting provides a semi-permanent solution, eliminating the need for daily mascara application.

What You'll Need

Before you begin, gather the necessary supplies:

  • Eyelash Tinting Kit: Purchase a kit specifically designed for eyelashes and eyebrows. These kits typically include:
    • Cream color
    • Gel activator
    • Soft paper under-eye shields
    • Applicator wand
    • Tiny comb
    • Card stock (for mixing)
  • Additional Supplies:
    • Magnifying mirror
    • Petroleum jelly
    • Cotton swabs
    • Disposable mascara wands
    • Tissues
    • Facial cleanser
    • Wet cotton wool pads

Preparing for the Tinting Process

Proper preparation is crucial for a safe and successful at-home lash tint:

  1. Allergy Test: This is a MUST. Apply a small amount of the mixed tint to a discreet area of skin (e.g., behind the ear) 48 hours before tinting to check for any adverse reactions.
  2. Cleanse Your Lashes: Ensure your lashes are squeaky clean and dry. Remove all traces of mascara and oily residue with a gentle, oil-free cleanser.
  3. Protect the Surrounding Skin: Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly around your eyes and on your upper and lower eyelids. This will act as a barrier, preventing the dye from staining your skin. If things get a little messy, the vaseline will act as a barrier, preventing any stains on the surrounding skin.

  1. Mix the Tint: Following the instructions in your kit, mix the cream color and gel activator on the card stock provided.
  2. Apply Under-Eye Shields: Place the soft paper under-eye shields under your bottom lashes to protect your skin.
  3. Apply the Tint:
    • Using the wand, apply the cream color to the lashes. Do one strip of lashes at a time, not an entire eye, or both eyes for that matter.
    • Coat the lashes thoroughly, ensuring even distribution of the product.
    • The lashes really clumped together and became quite spider-y at this point, which is when I’d recommend brushing with the disposable mascara wands to really distribute the color between the lashes.
    • Follow with a coating of the gel activator.
    • Taking full advantage of the fact that I didn’t see staining or experience burning, I really globbed the dye and activator onto every nook and cranny of my lash line, even into the roots.
  4. Wait: Let the tint sit for 5-10 minutes. If you’re nervous that your brows will go too dark, then just apply for 30 seconds at a time. That way you can monitor the colour. You can reapply as many times as you want to make them darker.
  5. Remove the Tint:
    • Leaning over the sink, wipe the tint off with two, wet cotton wool pads.
    • Remove the dye with a clean tissue.
    • Using your regular facial cleanser, remove the tint from your brow working from the inside out.
    • Be gentle to avoid pulling out your lashes.
    • Pro tip - if any mishaps occur and you get it on the skin, just use the other end of the cotton tip to wipe it away.
  6. Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse your eyes thoroughly with cool water to remove any remaining tint.

Important Safety Precautions

  • Read the Instructions: Always read and follow the instructions provided with your lash tinting kit.
  • Avoid Contact with Eyes: The warning label: “Avoid contact with skin and eyes.” If the tint comes into contact with your eyes, rinse immediately with cool water.
  • Discontinue Use if Irritation Occurs: If you experience any burning, stinging, swelling, or redness, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor.
  • Be Gentle: Avoid rubbing your eyes during the tinting process, as this can cause irritation and lash loss.
  • Don't Rush: Take your time and be precise when applying the tint to avoid staining the surrounding skin or getting the product in your eyes.

Troubleshooting

  • Staining on the Skin: If you accidentally stain your skin, use a cotton swab dipped in makeup remover or petroleum jelly to gently remove the stain.
  • Uneven Results: If your lashes are not tinted evenly, you can reapply the tint to the lighter areas, being careful to avoid over-processing.
  • Tint Too Dark: If your lashes are too dark, gently wash them with a mild soap and water to lighten the color.

Maintaining Your Tinted Lashes

  • Avoid Oil-Based Products: Oil-based makeup removers and cleansers can cause the tint to fade faster.
  • Use a Lash Conditioner: Applying a lash conditioner can help keep your lashes healthy and hydrated.
  • Schedule Touch-Ups: Eyelash tints typically last for 3-4 weeks. Schedule touch-up appointments as needed to maintain your desired color.
  • Our eyelashes, on the other hand, will need booking in at most, 4 weeks apart.
