How to Apply False Eyelashes with Glue: A Step-by-Step Guide

For those who admire long, feathery lashes but find extensions tedious and expensive, mastering the art of applying false eyelashes with glue is an excellent alternative. This guide provides a detailed, step-by-step approach to achieving a luxury lash lifestyle on a budget.

Preparing Your Supplies

Before you begin, gather the necessary tools and products:

  • False Eyelashes: Start with inexpensive strip lashes, such as Kiss Lash Couture Triple Push-Up Lashes in Teddy ($7). Natural lashes are typically the easiest for beginners.
  • Lash Adhesive: Opt for a brush applicator glue, like Duo, for better control over the amount of glue used.
  • Tweezers: Tweezerman Slant Tweezers or a lash applicator can aid in precise placement.
  • Small Scissors: For trimming the lash strips.
  • Mirror: A hand mirror or a mirror placed at a downward angle is helpful.
  • Eyeliner: Liquid or gel liner to camouflage the lash band.

Trimming the Eyelash Strips

Measure the strip against your actual eyelid and trim off the excess, not while it's against your eye. You can use the extra bit to later stack upon the lash strip at your eye's outer corners for extra va va voom if you want, or you can use it when you just want a bit more emphasis on top of your natural outer lashes, like a dress's train.

Applying the Adhesive

Apply a thin, even layer of lash adhesive to the band of the false eyelashes. Don't just glob it on and immediately stick it to your eyelid. Wait about 30 seconds to allow the glue to become tacky but not wet. During that 30 seconds, bend the strip to make the ends kiss, better distributing the adhesive onto the ends so they don't lift while you're wearing them.

Placing the Eyelashes

Look downwards into a mirror, not straight ahead. If you place a mirror under your face nearly to a perpendicular angle and look down, your eyelid will extend, almost like you're closing your eyes, but you'll be better able to see exactly where to place the strip. Don't close your eyes when applying, because it changes your eye shape.

Using tweezers or your fingers, carefully position the lash strip as close to your natural lash line as possible. Apply on lash line, not on eyelashes, it’s super painful when you accidentally pull a lash out with your falsies. Start by lining them up with your outer lash first. Then, take the tip of the inner lash and hold it down to your lash line.

Camouflaging the Lash Band

Now that you've got your lashes on, here's a crucial step to make your strip lashes look less obviously like you're wearing strip lashes. Take your trusty liquid liner (or gel liner with an angled eyeliner brush, if you prefer) and draw a line extending the band from where it begins to the inner corner of your eye.

Additional Tips for Success

  • Practice Makes Perfect: Applying false eyelashes takes practice. Don't get discouraged if you don't get it right away.
  • Start with the Hardest Side: If you find one eye easier to apply lashes to than the other, start with the more difficult side first.
  • Consider Individual Lashes: Ardell Individual Lashes ($9 for a pack of 32) allow you to pinpoint exactly where you want to fluff up your lashes.
  • Proper Glue Application: After you apply the glue don’t place it on your eye right away, wait a couple seconds for the glue to become tacky because if you don’t it’ll just slide all over your eye and mess up your liner/eyeshadow.
  • Avoid Straight Application: NEVER apply lashes “straight” make sure that when you’re applying them you hold them either with tweezers or your index finger & thumb twist up over your lid until your pinky is pointing at the sky (applying lashes straight on doesn’t give you the full effect and makes your lashes appear less full and as if they were facing down).
