Baby Powder as Dry Shampoo: A Comprehensive Guide

We've all been there: it's day two (or three) of unwashed hair, and you reach for your trusty dry shampoo, only to find it's all gone. Now, you need an alternative, and the most common one is baby powder. But is it safe to use baby powder as dry shampoo? This article explores the use of baby powder as a dry shampoo alternative, providing insights, DIY recipes, and considerations for different hair types.

The Appeal of Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo targets the natural oils in your hair that result in greasy hair. It's a quick fix for those days when washing your hair isn't feasible. Especially with the recent recall of many popular commercial dry shampoos, it is a great idea to try out a homemade dry shampoo recipe! Most of the items needed to make this fantastic hair potion can be found right in your home - sans the toxic ingredients and harmful chemicals that many aerosol cans / aerosol spray products have.

Baby Powder as a Substitute: Can You Swap?

The biggest question you want an answer to: Can we swap dry shampoo for baby powder? Kate says yes! This is because both powders have a pretty similar makeup. “Baby powder is usually made from talcum powder or corn starch, plus fragrance,” notes Kate. “Similarly, dry shampoo is often based on corn or rice starch. Those with “thick and light coloured hair will likely find these powders easier to use,” Kate points out.

Both baby powder and dry shampoo share similar absorbent qualities, making baby powder a potential substitute for soaking up excess oil and grime on our scalp.

Considerations Before Use

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Kate shares that those with darker hair may have a tougher time blending in the powder to their strands. You’ll likely be left with a “grayish tinge,” she mentions.

Hair Color Matters

Dry Shampoo is pretty exchangeable between hair types. Hair colors is a little bit of a different story. Because of how absorbent my recipe is, it is pretty universal. That being said, to make sure this dry shampoo is disguised well for all you ladies with darker hair colors, you can add in cocoa powder or activated charcoal powder. For my fellow females with lighter hair, dry shampoo should just soak right in!

  • Dark Hair: Those with darker hair may encounter a grayish tinge when using baby powder. To counteract this, consider adding cocoa powder or activated charcoal powder to the baby powder for better blending.
  • Light Hair: For lighter hair, baby powder should blend in seamlessly.

Ingredients

If you’re able to use the white powder or are really desperate, be sure you use one without talcum powder. Anyone with a sensitive scalp should steer clear of powders that contain any sort of fragrances. “Fragrances can also be irritating to the scalp, particularly in products that sit on the scalp like dry shampoo,” Kate says.

  • Talcum Powder: Ensure the baby powder is talc-free due to potential health concerns.
  • Fragrances: Opt for fragrance-free baby powder, especially if you have a sensitive scalp, as fragrances can cause irritation.

Alternatives

For those who are hesitant to use baby powder, Kate shares you could try cornstarch or cornflour.

  • Cornstarch: A common and safe alternative to baby powder.
  • Arrowroot Powder: Tablespoons of Arrowroot Powder is a common ingredient in other dry shampoo formulas. It is typically used for thickening sauces and making puddings but because of it’s nutrients and starchy ingredients, it makes for a good substitute for baby powder.

Basic Recipe

  • 1/4 cup of baby powder (or cornstarch/arrowroot powder)
  • Optional: Essential oils for fragrance (lemon or eucalyptus)

Instructions

  1. Mix the powder with a few drops of your chosen essential oil.
  2. Apply to the roots of your hair, focusing on oily areas.
  3. Let it sit for a few minutes to absorb the oil.
  4. Brush or massage the powder into your scalp until it's no longer visible.

Recipe for Dark Hair

  • 1/4 cup baby powder (or cornstarch/arrowroot powder)
  • 1-2 tablespoons cocoa powder or activated charcoal powder
  • Optional: Essential oils for fragrance

Adjust the amount of cocoa powder or activated charcoal powder to match your hair color for a seamless blend.

Alternative Solutions

“If you don’t have time to wash your hair, you can always rock the grease by putting your hair in a braid or slicked back look,” shares Kate.

  • Braids: A stylish way to conceal oily hair.
  • Slicked Back Styles: Use gel or hairspray to create a sleek, intentional look.

Additional Tips and Tricks

  • Application: Use a makeup brush to apply the powder precisely to the roots.
  • Scent: Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil for a pleasant fragrance. I like something that smells fresh and clean. Lemon and eucalyptus essential oils are my go-to.
  • Versatility: By accident, we found out that when our 3 year old sprinkled this DIY Hair Dry Shampoo Potion onto rugs and carpet and then vacuumed up, it leaves the rugs/ carpet smelling fresh too!

Dry Shampoo vs. Leave-In Conditioner

Dry Shampoo targets the natural oils in your hair that results in greasy hair. Conversely, Leave in Conditioner is used to aid in hair health and provide your hair with hydration and moisture - it prevents against hair damage and breakage. There is an Dry Conditioner hair product option with the best of both worlds. I have not had the chance to try it but I have read that you can make it simply with a spray bottle, water, and your own at home conditioner (among other optional ingredients).

Embrace Your Hair

When you are blessed with a crazy mop of hair like mine, you can either resist it’s madness or embrace it! I’ve decided on the ladder. After a shower, I either braid it or brush it out straight and go to bed. When I wake up, I can then either decide to unravel the braid and put it up, like 70% of the time or use my favorite deep wave hair tool. I love how this instantly works with my natural wave and volume to add amazing deep curls that last for days without looking messy. Don’t get me wrong, messy hair and me, go well together, but sometimes I like to look slightly more put-together. It’s super fast to heat up and literally takes me 6 minutes to toss a few waves in my hair. These flat claw clips are my favorite!
