Lashify Application Tutorial: Mastering the Look for Hooded Eyes

Sexy, sultry, and deep-set - these are just a few words often used to describe hooded eyes. While hooded eyes possess a unique allure, applying makeup, especially lash extensions, can sometimes feel like a challenge. This comprehensive guide provides a detailed tutorial on how to use Lashify products to enhance hooded eyes, creating a larger, more defined, and captivating look.

Understanding Hooded Eyes

Hooded eyes are characterized by an extra fold of skin beneath the brow bone that partially or completely covers the eyelid crease. To determine if you have hooded eyes, look straight into a mirror and observe if your entire eyelid is visible. If the skin on your brow bone conceals your crease, you likely have hooded eyes.

Eye shape can determine a lot about your appearance. For example, it’s almost common knowledge that rimming your entire eye with liner will make them appear smaller.

Essential Makeup Techniques for Hooded Eyes

Before diving into lash application, it's crucial to understand basic makeup techniques that complement hooded eyes:

  1. Primer is Key: Using an eyeshadow primer is essential for people with hooded lids. Hooded eyes are the most likely to smudge their makeup just by blinking because of how your lids crease. It helps hold all your eye makeup in place while preventing smudging and creasing.
  2. Crease Definition: When applying shadow, apply the color you would normally place in your natural crease just above the natural crease of your eyelid. Since your crease is so deep, you can create your own to add depth to your eyes. When you follow makeup tutorials, establish your new “crease” slightly above your natural crease. Don’t apply shadow to your natural crease since it’ll disappear into the lid when you open your eyes.
  3. Neutral Colors: Choosing colors that are neutral will naturally make your eye area appear larger.
  4. Inner Corner Highlight: You’re likely already doing this one, but applying a light color, like white, any pastel, or a shimmer, in your inner corner will brighten and open your eyes immediately. This is true of shadow and light-colored eyeliner on the water line.
  5. Outer Corner Definition: Related, just as light shades will elevate your look from the inner corner, the darker hues should fade to the outer corner. Keeping this fade-to-black at the outer corners will help make sure your eyes stay bright.
  6. Shimmery Eyeshadow: Next to primer, shimmery eye shadow is your other best friend.
  7. Upward Blending: As you apply your eyeshadow, you want the color to move up towards your brow bone and away from your crease, so brush upward. Blending down will make your eyes appear droopy and sleepy.
  8. Eyeliner Techniques: Long eyeliner wings can overwhelm hooded eyes. Cat eye eyeliner often ends up misshapen or smudged simply because of the shape of the eye. Don’t apply the eyeliner all along the lash line. Apply it to the outer corner only to form the wing. Keep your eyes open and relaxed while you apply. If you find that liquid or pencil eyeliners consistently end up a mess for you, try using an eyeshadow and a thin, precise brush. Open your eyes. From the tip of the wing, draw straight across to your natural lid crease. Then, when you close, you’ll be left with a shape to fill to create a perfect small wing. Many people with hooded eyes are convinced that eyeliner simply isn’t for them, but we have a secret for you: it is! You can still wing your eyeliner from the lower lash just as you would from the top lashes. Elevate this technique by experimenting with bright colors. Tight lining was once a trend for all kinds of eye shapes, but now we’re older and wiser and know this technique is hands down the prettiest on hooded-eye girlies. It’s a method of applying eyeliner so that it won't smudge or overwhelm the eye. Tight lining utilizes a soft kohl eyeliner or soft eye pencil. Instead of applying normally across the lash line of the upper eyelid, apply to the water line underneath your lashes. Look up and open your eyes to apply at the root of the lashes.
  9. Smokey Eye: Select your favorite dark shadow to get a smokey eye for hooded eyes (we recommend a combo of one dark matte and one smokey shimmer). This is going to show you the actual area you want to cover. Additionally, apply the same shadow to the lower lid. This may sound odd or intimidating if you’ve never tried it, but lower-lid eye shadow is a real game-changer for hooded eyes.
  10. Color Block Eyeshadow: A look that is both trendy and flattering for hooded eyes is color block eye shadow. Select any shade: perhaps one to compliment your eye color, your skin tone, or your outfit of the day. After applying your primer, apply a thin layer at first across your entire eyelid, past the crease to the brow bone.
  11. Metallic Eyeshadow: Metallic eye shadows have been on trend for what feels like years now. But for those with hooded eyes, it can be a hard trend to jump on since it demands the entire lid. Start with a primer, followed by an ultra-light layer of neutral eye shadow to help the sparkly stay in place. Grab your favorite shimmering eye shadow. Glitter, metallics, whatever speaks to you, but it must be shiny.

Why Lashify is Ideal for Hooded Eyes:

  • Customization: With salon lashes, you’re locked into one style until your lash extensions fall out or you have them removed. Our Gossamer lashes are designed to be worn for up to 10 days with proper care. Want to swap your daytime lashes for more nighttime drama? We recommend storing your Gossamer lashes on the cartridge they arrive on, to keep them safe and ensure you’re always able to find them. Two sets of Gossamer lashes. There are so many options it can be hard to pick. You get to fully customize your lash length, curl type, and color. From incredibly lowkey and natural to over-the-top and luxe, we’ve got options that can make your lash dreams a reality.
  • Under-Lash Application: Gossamer lashes attach beneath your natural lashes. This unique application method provides a more natural look and avoids the heavy, weighed-down feeling that can sometimes occur with traditional extensions.
  • Lash Health: If you’ve suffered brittle natural lashes after having repeated lash extensions, that’s understandable. Lashify doesn’t use glue for our Gossamer lashes. Instead, we use Bonds that are more lash serum than adhesive. Lash glue traditionally contains ingredients that are bad for your natural lashes and for the delicate skin around your eyes. Lashify is different. Our Bonds contain nourishing ingredients, like biotin and Lavendula, which help support the growth of your natural lashes while you’re wearing your Gossamer lash extensions.

The Lashify Control Kit: Your Essential Tools

The Lashify Control Kit provides everything you need for a successful application:

  • Two sets of Gossamer lashes. You get to pick the styles that work best for you. The styles listed above are available for adding to your control kit, so you can wear them alone or mix and match them to create new looks.

  • Glass Finishing Coat. Gossamer lashes are created to be worn for up to ten days, but you can increase their ability to last by coating them with Glass Finishing Coat. Glass helps seal your Bond and gives your Gossamer lashes long-lasting wear.

We offer the Control Kit in two colors: black and white. Choose which color you want for your case and Fuse Control Wand.

Selecting the Right Gossamer Lashes for Hooded Eyes

Even if you have hooded eyes with less lid space than other eye shapes, it’s still possible to make your eyes appear larger. An easy hack? When choosing Gossamer lashes, consider the following to best complement hooded eyes:

  • Curl: It’s no secret that curl is your best friend, especially if you have hooded eyes. Curl Gossamer Lashes features a delicate flutter that amplifies your natural lashes and a curl that is boldly natural. Curl Gossomers are the chameleon of lashes. They work on every eye shape, and that includes you.
  • Hybrid Look: For a hybrid look, we recommend using one of our lash maps.
  • Everyday Look: If you’re looking for lashes that work for your day job, these are your new go-to. The Amplify ‘A’ kit gives an everyday and effortless look (most natural).
  • Length without Weight: Want to add length to your hooded eyes without weight? Try the Tulip Black Gossamer Collection. As the length and volume increase, your eye naturally looks longer.
  • Wispy, Fanned-Out Lashes: For the ultimate wispy, fanned-out lashes, the Gemini collection is the solution. These are perfect for combining to create elongated lash looks that work well for lengthening hooded eyes. For a piecey lash look with hooded eyes, try the Gemini Gossamers. They’re great for stacking and adding dimension to hooded eyes. Their thicker-than-average fibers also hold a curl extremely well.
  • Winged Eyeliner Effect: Let’s face it-mastering a winged liner technique is hard. Why not let the angle and shape of your lashes do the job for you? This is our first-ever pre-mapped lash collection that gives you easy access to lashes that were created to mimic winged eyeliner. These lashes are flat and angled and a complete no-brainer to apply. The easiest way to fake a lengthier-looking eye is by creating additional length with liner. Winged liner looks fantastic on hooded lids, although it can be notoriously tricky to master. If you know that winged liner just isn’t in your skill set, or if you just don’t want to take the time to do it, you can always fake it with lash extensions. These lashes are the perfect solution for creating a winged liner look without having to worry about eyeliner application or transfer onto other parts of your eyelid.
  • Volume: Fluffy Gossamers are one of our most popular volume lashes. They provide soft, fluttery volume and dimension, which is especially beneficial to those with hooded eyes. The Bold ‘B’ kit creates a mascara-like drama (thickest fiber). For added length and volume, pair a Curl Gossamer with some Extreme Gossamers. Like the Gemini Gossamers, Drama Gossamers offer a thick fiber and a super strong curl. Instead of being piecey, Drama Gossamers feature our signature cross-weave design for extra volume and dramatic impact.
  • Avoid Mono-Length Lashes: Lashes that have one length on the ends (instead of varied like natural lashes) can make your eyes look heavy.
  • Go Easy on Length: If you have hooded eyes, it may be possible for eyelash extensions to curl back too far and touch your lids, especially if you’re using a really lengthy lash extension.

Step-by-Step Lashify Application for Hooded Eyes

Applying your Gossamer lashes is easy. Unlike salon lashes or some at-home lash styles you find in the store, Lashify Gossamer lashes are safe and actually beneficial for your natural lashes. This application technique sets Lashify apart from other lash brands. Take control of your lash look, and get the lashes that complement your hooded eyes.

  1. Prepare Your Lashes: Your eye area should be completely free of makeup and any other kind of skincare product. Your lashes and lids should be free of oils to ensure that the bond will properly adhere.
  2. Apply Bond:
    • Apply a light coat to the underside of your lashes, focusing just above the roots. Avoid brushing all the way to the tips to prevent clumping of your natural lashes. Work your way from the inner edge to the middle part and then the outer edge. Lashify Tip: If your lashes look overly wet, you may have applied too much bond.
    • Apply another coat, this time concentrating above the roots of your lashes.
    • Use the Whisper Light in clear to add dots about 1mm to 2mm above the waterline. Lashify Tip: The waterline is the flesh-colored line of skin between the eyelashes and the eye. Lashify tip: Less is more. You don’t need to apply more bond for a stronger hold. And you don’t need to rush to place your Gossamer lashes before the bond dries.
  3. Apply Gossamer Lashes:
    • Once the bond has dried clear and become tacky, remove the Gossamer lashes from the cartridge by gently gripping from the base using your fingertips.
    • Start applying the Gossamer on the underside of your natural lashes, a quarter of the way in from the inner edge working your way to the outer edge. Lashify Tip: Apply the inner corner Gossamer once you have finished applying the rest of your lashes. Oftentimes the inner corner lash isn’t needed.
    • Remember that the Gossamer should be applied 1mm to 2mm above the waterline. The roots of your natural eyelashes should still be visible. Lashify tip: If you’re in a rush and need the bond to become tacky faster, you can use our Blow tool to fast-track the process.
  4. Fuse:
    • Once you’re happy with the placement of your Gossamer lashes, you can start fusing. First, slip the Wandoms included in your Control Kit onto the tops of the wand for a non-stick fuse. There are two ways to fuse. The first is a “full fuse”, use the curved end of the wand to follow the curvature of the eyelid from the outer corner to the bridge of the nose and press down to “fuse” the Gossamers to your natural lashes.
  5. Seal (Optional): Using Glass is optional. If you’d like to further seal, wait up to thirty minutes to apply Glass. And you’re done!

Many beginners get it right on their first try; others don’t, but that’s okay. As with most things, mastering the art of Lashify takes practice and patience.
