When the Guinness World Records are mentioned, images of extraordinarily long, curly fingernails often come to mind. However, the record for the world's longest eyelashes overshadows them all. These eyelashes, almost 5 inches in length, took their owner nearly 50 years to cultivate.
According to Guinness World Records, You Jianxia, born in Shanghai in 1968, boasts a lash on her left upper eyelid measuring a staggering 12.4 centimeters (approximately 4.88 inches). This record was officially set on June 28, 2016, raising the possibility that Jianxia's eyelashes have grown even longer since then.
In a press release promoting the 2018 edition of the Guinness World Records, publishers shared that Jianxia discovered her extraordinarily long lash "during an 18-month nature retreat she embarked on in 2013." They added, "She puts the growth down to the life she leads at one with nature."
"I first realized that my eyelashes were growing in 2015," Jianxia shared. Intrigued by this phenomenon, she consulted medical professionals to understand why her eyelashes were significantly longer than those of others. She also explored potential scientific explanations, such as genetic factors. Jianxia believes there might be a connection between her long eyelashes and a stronger body. She noted that she was relatively weak at birth but is now in fair health.
Jianxia finds that her naturally long eyelashes eliminate the need for eyeshadow or eyeliner. "Thanks to my naturally long eyelashes, I don't need to wear eyeshadow or eyeliner," she stated. She also finds it easy to wash her face and carry out her daily routine. According to Jianxia, the eyelashes naturally fall out and grow again. Occasionally, they may break if pulled carelessly, but she doesn't consider it a problem because they continue to grow. "Because my eyelashes are natural, I find it easy to wash my face and go about my daily life. They fall out and grow again. Sometimes they break if you pull them carelessly. It’s not an issue, as they are still growing."

Jianxia expressed that her eyelashes bring her "lots of joys" and do not cause any concerns or difficulties in her daily life. "In my daily life, my eyelashes don't bring any concerns or difficulties. Just lots of joys."
Jianxia's record was featured in the Guinness World Records 2018 book, alongside other remarkable achievements, including Ayanna Williams's incredibly long fingernails. Williams, a Houston-based nail artist, grew her nails for 23 years, reaching a length of almost 19 feet.
