Sean Combs, also known as Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, PD, or Love, has been the subject of numerous allegations and investigations, primarily concerning sexual assault, sex trafficking, and racketeering. These accusations have led to civil lawsuits and a federal criminal investigation, significantly impacting his career and reputation. This article aims to provide a structured overview of the allegations, the legal proceedings, and the key figures involved.
In September 2024, Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and William S. Walker, the Acting Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), announced the arrest of Sean Combs. He was charged with a three-count indictment that included racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. The indictment alleges that between 2008 and the present, Combs engaged in a pattern of abuse, threats, and coercion against women, leading a racketeering conspiracy that involved sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction of justice.
HSI Acting Special Agent in Charge William S. Walker emphasized the commitment to uncovering the alleged pattern of manipulation, exploitation, and abuse, stressing that the investigation was made possible by the strength of victims and witnesses who had endured hardships.
The indictment followed several civil lawsuits that began in November 2023. These lawsuits detailed allegations of sexual assault, physical abuse, and coercion.
In November 2023, Casandra Ventura, known as Cassie, Combs’ former romantic partner, filed a civil suit alleging sexual and physical abuse during their relationship. Filed under New York state’s Adult Survivors Act, the suit claimed that Combs raped her, beat her in fits of “uncontrollable rage,” and exerted a “tight hold over her life.” She alleged that he forced her to engage in sex acts he called “Freak Offs” with other men, often sex workers, while he watched. The abuse reportedly spanned from 2007 until Cassie left him in late 2018. Combs initially denied the allegations, but the suit was settled a day after it was filed. Ventura later testified in court that she had received a $20 million settlement in the case.

Inspired by Cassie’s lawsuit, Joi Dickerson-Neal filed a suit against Combs in November 2023, alleging that Combs drugged and sexually assaulted her in 1991 while she was a student. She claimed that Combs filmed the assault and showed it to others. Combs denied these allegations.
On the last day of eligibility under the Adult Survivors Act, Liza Gardner accused Combs of sexually assaulting her when she was 16 years old in either 1990 or 1991. Gardner alleged that she and a friend met Combs and R&B singer Aaron Hall at an event held by MCA Records in Manhattan. After the party, she was invited back to Hall’s apartment with Combs, and the two offered her drinks throughout the night. Combs then coerced her into having sex, leaving Gardner “shocked and traumatized.” Hall allegedly barged into the room after Combs was done, pinned her down, and sexually assaulted her, according to the suit. Combs denied Gardner’s allegations.
In December 2023, a Jane Doe filed a lawsuit alleging that she was gang-raped and sex-trafficked by Combs and Harve Pierre, a former longtime president of Combs’ record label, in 2003, when she was 17. She claimed that Combs and Pierre convinced her to travel with them on a private jet to New York City. Before they left, Pierre allegedly smoked crack cocaine and forced Doe to perform oral sex on him. Doe was taken to a studio in New York City, where Combs, Pierre, and a third defendant plied her with “copious amounts of drugs and alcohol.” The three men allegedly took turns raping her in a bathroom at the studio after she was too inebriated to consent. Combs denied the assault allegations, and Pierre called the suit “a tale of fiction.”
In February 2024, Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones alleged in a federal suit that Combs and his associates engaged in “serious illegal activity.” Jones, who worked as a producer on Combs’ latest album and lived and traveled with him from September 2022 to November 2023, alleged sexual harassment, pressure to engage in sexual acts, and witnessing Combs giving drinks laced with drugs to people at parties. Jones claimed that Combs required him to “record him constantly,” resulting in hours of footage in which Combs and his staff allegedly engaged in criminal conduct. Jones alleged that Combs was attempting to groom him into having a sexual relationship with him. He also accused Combs and his son of being involved in a 2022 shooting at a Los Angeles recording studio. An attorney for Combs dismissed Jones’ allegations as “pure fiction” and a transparent attempt to garner headlines.
In April 2024, Grace O’Marcaigh alleged in a lawsuit that Christian Combs, Sean Combs’ son, drugged and sexually assaulted her while she was working on a yacht chartered by the elder Combs at the end of 2022. The suit also names Sean Combs as a defendant.

In March 2024, Homeland Security Investigations agents raided Combs’ properties in Los Angeles and Miami. Firearms were found at his residences, and Combs was stopped at a Miami airport prior to a scheduled trip to the Bahamas. Officials seized his cellphones. One of Combs’ attorneys, Dyer, stated that Combs “was never detained but spoke to and cooperated with authorities,” describing the raid as an ambush and emphasizing that there has been no finding of criminal or civil liability with any of these allegations.
Brendan Paul, a Combs associate, was arrested at the Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport at the same time Combs was stopped. Paul was named in Jones’ suit as someone who acquires and distributes drugs and guns on Combs’ behalf. He was charged with possession of suspected cocaine and suspected marijuana candy.
In May 2024, CNN released a video showing Combs attacking Cassie in a Los Angeles hotel in March 2016. The video, which had no audio, showed Combs grabbing and throwing Cassie to the ground, kicking her twice, and then dragging her by her sweatshirt. Days after the video was made public, Combs issued a statement apologizing for his behavior, stating that he sought therapy and rehab following the incident, which he described as one of his "darkest" times.
Cassie’s attorney, Meredith Firetog, responded that Combs’ apology was “more about himself than the many people he has hurt,” highlighting his previous denials and suggesting his apology was disingenuous.
In early September 2024, Dawn Richard, a former member of the Danity Kane musical group, sued Combs in federal court, alleging that Combs groped, assaulted, and imprisoned her, and threatened her life when she tried to intervene in defense of Cassie. Combs' attorney expressed shock and disappointment at Richard’s lawsuit.

On September 16, 2024, Combs was arrested and charged with sex trafficking and racketeering. His attorney, Marc Agnifilo, stated that Combs was the subject of "what we believe is an unjust prosecution" and that he would clear his name. Agnifilo emphasized Combs' cooperation with the investigation.
The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York stated that Combs had abused, threatened, and coerced victims to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct since at least 2008. The indictment accused Combs of using his business to commit crimes, including sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction of justice.
