The tale of Willy Wonka, the eccentric chocolatier, holds a special place in the hearts of many. As arranger and composer Joby Talbot noted during Variety’s Artisans Screening Series of “Wonka”, in partnership with BSBP moderated by Variety‘s international correspondent K.J. Yossman, the story is ingrained in our collective DNA. The prequel "Wonka" brought together a team of talented artisans who meticulously crafted every detail, from the delectable chocolate to the characters' unforgettable looks.
Talbot, who grew up with the 1971 film “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” starring Gene Wilder, spoke of the "iconic memories" associated with the original, including its memorable songs. The "Wonka" team cleverly incorporated some of these songs into the prequel, aiming to "drive the story forward" while paying homage to the beloved classic.
One of the most crucial elements of the film was, of course, the chocolate itself. In a harrowing scene, Willy (Timothée Chalamet) and his friend Noodle (Calah Lane) find themselves immersed in a river of melted chocolate. Special effects supervisor Hayley Williams revealed the meticulous process of creating the perfect chocolate for the screen. The team used real chocolate samples to determine the ideal color, texture, and sheen. Director Paul King was particularly discerning about the chocolate's appearance, ensuring it looked appetizing and realistic on camera. Interestingly, the company that manufactured the coloring for the Johnny Depp version of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" also contributed to the visual creation of the chocolate in "Wonka".
Makeup and hair designer Ivana Primorac discussed the transformation of Olivia Colman into the villainous Mrs. Scrubbit. Colman embraced the character's less-than-desirable qualities, eager to amplify her flaws. Primorac shared that Colman wanted "more of everything straight away," including broken capillaries and even hairy legs beneath her kimono. The goal was to create a character that was larger than life, fully embodying Mrs. Scrubbit's unpleasant nature.
One of the most talked-about aspects of "Wonka" was Timothée Chalamet's portrayal of the titular character, including his distinctive hairstyle. Yossman inquired about the process of styling Chalamet's hair into the perfect Willy Wonka look, a challenge given the fluctuating temperatures on set - from freezing weather to hot studio conditions. Primorac acknowledged that Chalamet possesses "an incredible head of hair, not always easy to manage." The team had to work diligently to maintain the hairstyle's consistency and shape throughout filming, adjusting their techniques to adapt to the environment.

Visual effects supervisor Graham Page delved into the process of transforming Hugh Grant into an Oompa Loompa, who is digitally shrunk to a fraction of his original size. The team meticulously photographed Grant in great detail to create a digital recreation of him. Page explained that they also employed de-aging techniques to further enhance the character's appearance. Grant dedicated himself to perfecting his Oompa Loompa performance, especially in his scenes with Chalamet, ensuring a seamless blend of live-action and visual effects.
Costume designer Lindy Hemming described her creative process, which begins with cartoon-like sketches. She admitted feeling apprehensive about sharing these initial designs with actors before casting is finalized, as the costumes often evolve based on the actor's presence and interpretation of the character.
Set decorator Lee Sandales discussed the inspiration behind Wonka's first shop, a manifestation of the chocolatier's childhood dream shared with his mother. Sandales revealed that "everything is taken from the script and the idea of the chocolate shop itself." The shop is conceived as a memory of his childhood and the love of his mother. Upon entering the shop, visitors encounter a river and a barge, reminiscent of Wonka's childhood experiences. Every detail within the shop reflects Wonka's memories of his mother, creating an atmosphere steeped in love and nostalgia.
