The friendship between Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano, co-stars of the hit television series Charmed, is a multifaceted narrative marked by camaraderie, conflict, and, ultimately, a journey toward understanding and reconciliation. Their bond, intertwined with the professional dynamics of a successful television show, offers a glimpse into the complexities of relationships under the intense scrutiny of fame.
Holly Marie Combs' journey began in San Diego, California. Born to a young mother, Lauralei Combs (née Berckhem), she experienced a nomadic childhood, moving with her mother as she pursued an acting career in New York City. This early exposure to the world of entertainment set the stage for her future endeavors.
Combs' path intersected with Shannen Doherty, and they became friends. Doherty eventually took Combs along to the audition for Charmed when Doherty was given the pilot script. Initially, they auditioned for different roles, but Aaron Spelling ultimately cast Doherty as Prue Halliwell and Combs as Piper Halliwell.
The casting of Charmed in 1998 brought Combs and Milano together, along with Shannen Doherty, as the three Halliwell sisters, powerful witches who use their combined "Power of Three" to protect the innocent. For the first three seasons, Combs played the second oldest of the three sisters. For the first 3 seasons of 'Charmed', Holly Marie Combs had third billing, therefore was credited between Shannen Doherty and Alyssa Milano in the opening credits.
Alyssa Milano has said that the bond between Combs and Doherty made her feel like an outsider on the set of Charmed. According to Milano, "Holly and Shannen were best friends for like ten years before the show started so it was very much sort of like high school."

In 1999, Milano reflected on the positive aspects of their connection, stating, "I feel that we’re incredibly lucky that the three of us found each other. We all have horses so we all have things that are in common. Holly and I keep our horses at the same ranch so we go riding all the time together and we’re very similar and, um, very close - we’re blessed in that way. It’s like a big slumber party every day."
However, the set dynamics were not always harmonious. The departure of Shannen Doherty from Charmed after the third season cast a shadow over the show and the relationships between the remaining cast members. The reasons for Doherty's exit have been a subject of debate, with accusations of a toxic work environment and power struggles surfacing over the years.
The exit of Shannen Doherty from Charmed remains a contentious issue. Alyssa Milano has suggested that Doherty created a difficult work environment, while Doherty has claimed that Milano orchestrated her firing to become "number one on the call sheet."
In December 2023, Doherty and Combs discussed the circumstances surrounding Doherty's departure on Doherty's podcast, Let's Be Clear. Combs recounted a conversation with producer Jonathan Levin, who allegedly stated that the situation had become a choice between Doherty and Milano.
February 3, 2024, at a Who’s the Boss? panel at Orlando MegaCon, Milano refuted what Combs and Doherty said on Let’s Be Clear. Later, she posts her remarks at the Con as an Instagram post, with further statements in the caption. “I don’t know one other show that has had the success that Charmed had where the cast still speaks ill of the experience a quarter of a century later … This was so long ago that any retelling of these stories from anyone is just revisionist history.” Milano refuted Combs’s story, saying instead that things were so bad on set that the show hired a third-party mediator. “There was a professional mediator (I was told Holly and Shannen would not participate in any mediation) and an on-set producer/babysitter who were both brought in to investigate all claims,” she wrote. “It was then recommended by this mediator, after collecting testimony from cast AND crew - what changes should be made if the show was going to continue. The studio, Aaron Spelling, and network made the decision to protect the international hit that was Charmed.

Combs responded to Milano's comments, stating, "I feel the need to defend myself after the many continuing attacks that have ensued since Alyssa stepped out on the stage [at MegaCon] and essentially called Shannen and I liars. Suffice to say I’m a little shocked and a little disappointed especially by the things she posted the next day while texting me simultaneously words to the contrary." Combs further asserted that Milano "had the power to stop the process at any time" that led to Doherty's departure.
Despite the conflicts and controversies, there have been indications of reconciliation and a desire to move forward. In 2017, Alyssa Milano revealed that she and Shannen Doherty had resolved their differences. "I think we’re just at ages now that what happens 15 years ago, or however long ago that was, it’s irrelevant," Milano told E!. "I think that what she has gone through, motherhood in my life, I think it just changes people. I’m so happy that she’s feeling well."
Following Doherty’s death from cancer at the age 53, Milano spoke of her co-star in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Deadline. Additionally, Combs and several other Charmed cast members, including Rose McGowan, who succeeded Doherty on the show, posted tributes on social media. “It’s no secret that Shannen and I had a complicated relationship, but at its core was someone I deeply respected and was in awe of,” Milano said. “She was a talented actress, beloved by many and the world is less without her. “I’m sad that people can’t move past it,” Milano said at the time. Combs took some time to process the news of Doherty’s death, calling her former co-star and longtime friend “my better half of 31 years.” Combs’ heartfelt Instagram message next to a slew of photos of the two of them over the years, also spoke of Doherty as “a fierce fighter til the end. My most ardent champion. My loyal protector. McGowan referred to her shared history with Doherty on Charmed. “Shannen Doherty had the heart of a lion,” she wrote on Instagram. “Our lives had been intertwined in a unique way. Brian Krause, who played Leo Wyatt on Charmed said of Doherty, “You showed me what strength is,” he wrote. “You taught me to be fearless and live with purpose. “What a warrior.
