The Comprehensive Guide to Male Pubic Area Waxing: Manzilian and Beyond

In recent years, there's been a noticeable shift in men's grooming habits, with more and more men embracing practices like manscaping. Among these, manzilian waxing, also known as male Brazilian wax, has surged in popularity. This comprehensive guide navigates the ins and outs of male pubic area waxing, covering everything from what a manzilian wax entails to the process, benefits, and essential etiquette.

Understanding Manzilian Waxing

A manzilian wax is essentially the male version of a bikini wax or female Brazilian wax. It involves removing all or most of the hair from the male pubic area, including the front, back, and in-between. This encompasses the shaft, scrotum, inner buttocks, and outer buttocks. Some men opt to leave a small strip or triangle of hair, while others prefer complete hair removal. The choice is entirely personal. The somewhat vague term male Brazilian waxing, refers to any removal of hair from the pubis, penis, scrotum, perineum, or buttocks. The definition also usually includes the bikini line, or an inch or two out from the leg crease. It takes its name from female Brazilian waxing.

While a traditional bikini wax for women refers to bikini line waxing for women, some estheticians offer a male bikini wax. Male bikini waxing is a hair removal procedure that involves the removal of unwanted hair from the pubic area. This typically includes the hair around the base of the scrotum.

Manzilian vs. Male Body Waxing

It's important to distinguish between manzilian waxing and other forms of male body waxing. Male waxing is the broad term for hair removal for men using depilatory wax; it is also called "male body waxing". Male body waxing refers to all body areas from neck to toe except the genital and buttocks area. Normal body hair is finer with shallower roots than pubic hair.

Why Choose Manzilian Waxing?

Men seek manzilian waxes for various reasons, primarily to avoid the risk of cuts from shaving and to prevent razor burn, bumps, and ingrown hairs. As men’s hair can be especially thick and coarse, the manzilian waxing area is more prone to ingrown hairs and acne after shaving, making a manzilian wax a far superior method of hair removal. More often than not, men get Brazilian waxes to avoid the risk of cuts from shaving and to prevent razor burn, bumps, and ingrowns.

Beyond these practical benefits, a Brazilian wax offers several advantages:

  • Long-lasting Smoothness: A manzilian wax can keep the skin completely smooth for up to two weeks before stubble appears. Generally, after getting a brazilian wax you can expect your smooth results to last anywhere from three to six weeks. Factors like how quickly your hair grows and and your personal preferences can influence this timeframe.
  • Effective Hair Removal Treatment: With regular waxing, your body hair will grow back finer and sparser over time. This means you will look better even between hair removal sessions.
  • Better Skin: Shaving the pubic area often leads to ingrown hairs and irritation. Waxing can minimize and even eliminate this problem. Waxing itself is a kind of exfoliation, which helps remove dead skin cells and other impurities that block the pores. After every session, you will notice brighter, glowing skin.
  • Economical than Shaving: If you shave, you need to keep purchasing razors, blades, and shaving cream, which can be costly over time. In contrast, waxing is cheaper, as it removes hair from the root and its results last longer.
  • Boosted Confidence: Feeling clean, smooth, and well-groomed in intimate areas can enhance body awareness and self-esteem, which can result in great comfort and confidence in intimate moments.
  • Improved Hygiene: Many men choose Brazilian wax as part of their grooming routine for its benefits. From long-lasting smoothness, improved hygiene, and increased confidence to comfort, it offers a wide range of benefits that go beyond just appearance.

What to Expect During a Manzilian Wax

The process of Brazilian wax for men and women is similar and quite simple. However, if this is your first time getting waxed, it is normal to feel uncertain, and knowing what to expect can help achieve optimal results. Here's a breakdown of what you can expect:

  1. Consultation: After you reach the waxing spa, the aesthetician will ask you about any skin sensitivities, allergies, or medical conditions you have. They will also discuss your grooming goals and the areas you want waxed, and if you have had any previous waxing experience.

  2. Preparation: Staff will take you to a private room and ask you to undress as needed, depending on the area you need waxed. You will receive a towel for modesty and help keep parts out of the way and the skin taut.

  3. Cleansing: The therapist will cleanse the area or may give you a cleansing wipe to clean your intimate area before they start. They may also apply a pre-wax oil or powder to protect the skin and ensure a comfortable experience. Then, cleanse, disinfect, and protect the skin.

  4. Waxing: The waxing process usually involves the application of hot wax in small patches, which is quickly pulled off in the opposite direction of hair growth to remove the hair from the root. The type of wax used will depend on the area and your hair type. Brazilian wax educator Melissa Jannes recommends using hard, stripless wax. Apply the wax in the direction of hair growth, working in small sections. Then, hold your skin taut and quickly pull off the wax in the opposite direction of growth.

    • You will need to be moved into some humbling positions for complete access to the areas. Clients need to be involved with their manzilian wax process to keep their bits in check and taut during their appointments. It never hurts to explain the entire process, including positioning, before the service begins.

      1. Ask the client to pull their outer leg into their stomach. Have them hold the outer buttock up and open for complete access while holding their testicles taut with their bottom hand.
      2. You can also have the client lie down with the soles of their feet together in a butterfly position for complete access. For some, the scrotum’s skin can be very thin and can be pulled taut without injury. Be mindful to apply as little pressure as possible on the testicles. Have them hold their shaft with the towel. The base of the shaft is where the hair would lead into the testicles. The direction of hair growth can be varied.
  5. Duration: The entire waxing process typically takes between 20 - 45 minutes, depending on your hair growth, type, and the areas being treated. Thicker or denser hair may require a bit more time, particularly during the first session.

  6. Post-Wax Care: A calming lotion will be applied to reduce redness and itching. If you are offered any at-home care, like a Peel-Off Jelly Mask, take it! These also speed healing and reduce ingrown hairs and acne after waxing.

Preparing for Your Manzilian Wax

To ensure the best possible experience, follow these pre-wax care tips:

  • Hair Length: When preparing for a male Brazilian wax, the ideal hair length is ¼ to ½ inch long (about the size of a grain of rice). Any hair that is shorter than 1⁄4 inch (0.6 cm) is going to be very difficult to remove, and could result in pulled skin and a lot of pain. The same goes for hair longer than 1⁄2 inch (1.3 cm). If you shave, this is usually about 2 weeks of hair growth. If you shave, we prefer ¼ to ½ inch re-growth.
  • Exfoliate: Exfoliate the pubic area a day or two before your appointment to remove dead skin. Thoroughly clean the area and moisturize it lightly. Exfoliate your skin while you're in the shower. Taking off the dead skin cells will give you a cleaner wax.
  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water before your appointment to ensure your skin is hydrated and resilient.
  • Avoid Irritants: Avoid excessive sun exposure in the days leading up to your waxing appointment. UV rays can make skin more sensitive and increase the risk of irritation or discomfort during the waxing process. Also, avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol before your appointment and take an anti-inflammatory (like Ibuprofen) an hour before you arrive.
  • Cleanliness: Please come freshly showered, free from lotions or oils, and in loose-fitting cotton clothes. Don't put on lotion or oil after your shower. If you want, you can sprinkle on a little baby powder.
  • Communicate: Remind your client that they should never shave between waxes if they want to minimize their hair growth through repeat visits. It never hurts to explain the entire process, including positioning, before the service begins.

Managing Pain and Sensitivity

Male Brazilian waxing can cause mild-to-moderate pain, especially if you are having it for the first time, but the sensation is temporary and manageable, and it gets easier with regular sessions. Also, everyone has a different threshold for pain. What is painful for an individual might not affect another as much.

To minimize discomfort:

  • Take an anti-inflammatory (like Ibuprofen) an hour before you arrive.
  • Avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol before your appointment, as they can make your skin more sensitive to pain.
  • Remember that with time and frequent waxing, pain and sensitivity decrease as hair grows back finer and sparser.
  • If your pain levels increase, apply more baby powder to your skin.

Post-Wax Care

Proper aftercare ensures a comfortable recovery and prevents issues like irritation and ingrown hairs. What you can do:

  • Use cold compresses and cooling gels to soothe the skin
  • Apply cold packs to close the skin’s pores
  • Avoid touching or scratching the waxed area
  • Wear loose clothes and avoid activities that might cause friction or chafing.
  • Drink lots of water to help the skin recover faster
  • Exfoliate after 48 hours to prevent ingrown hairs
  • Educate clients on the benefits of the Starpil Peel-Off Jelly Mask and offer to apply one to them as a post-wax care treatment and one for at-home use. For regular post-wax care, educate clients not only on the process itself but also on which products to use. For the best post-wax Manzilian care, use Starpil’s Original Post-Wax Lotion or Starsoft Post-Wax Lotion. It’s also crucial to explain the value of post-wax exfoliation.
  • Avoid exercise, hot bath/shower, sauna, steam, hot tub, pools and beaches 24 hours after waxing.
  • Avoid tight clothing after waxing, especially in the waxed areas.
  • Apply a moisturizer to hydrate your skin. A natural moisturizer will help soothe your skin, which may be red and irritated after your wax. Your skin needs room to breathe and heal. If you have time, spend a few hours wearing nothing but your bathrobe around the house. Similarly, you may want to stay away from sexual contact or nude sunbathing for a few days.

Most men experience no issues after waxing. However, if you notice persistent irritation, itching, or signs of infection, consult your waxing professional or a doctor.

Addressing Common Concerns

Erections During Waxing

Let’s just get this out of the way-an erection is common during a manzilian wax. You know it happens; it’s an adrenal response from the body, not a sexual one. No need to be embarrassed. If an erection happens and the client is embarrassed or apologetic, reassure them in the same way you would when a woman passes gas. If it’s an issue, you can leave the room until they can get it under control.

Esthetician Comfort

If you’re concerned about your esthetician’s comfort level, know that those who might feel that a manzilian would create a threatening or highly awkward situation most likely won’t provide the service. Waxers need to use their best judgment if they feel like a male client is making them uncomfortable.

Waxing Etiquette

Really, the etiquette for male or female Brazilian waxing is similar. The same rules apply. However, there are some crucial etiquette tips that may especially apply to men. Not only does this make for a smelly waxing service for your esthetician, but it also makes for a more challenging one! Sweat can affect how well wax adheres to your hair. Also, please don’t have any alcohol before your appointment. Act the same way you would act with your doctor. Keep “things” close to your body and be mindful of personal space. Please do not ask any Esthetician out on a date here at We Wax That! Spa. We are kind because we are in service to our clients with a positive approach to help ease this not so easy service you are receiving, and no other reason than that. We do not date clients.

Home Waxing

If you want to avoid awkwardness with a professional waxer or you’re just looking to save a little money, waxing yourself at home is your best option.

  1. Trim your hair to just under ½ inch to make it easier to wax.
  2. Take a hot shower, which will open your pores and make the process less painful.
  3. After you get out the shower, use a stick to apply the wax in small patches less than 1 square inch to reduce pain and discomfort.
  4. Lay the strips on top of the wax and pull against the hair growth so the hairs come out cleanly.
  5. Start with the hair at the base of your penis and work your way back to your scrotum and backside.
  6. While it’s totally optional to wax your balls, many men prefer to wax everything. Use 2 fingers to pull an area of the scrotum as smooth as possible, then apply the wax with a tongue depressor. Let the wax cool for about 30 seconds, then pull the wax off quickly, keeping your skin taut.
  7. Rub the oil that came with your waxing kit (or another oil made for use on skin, like baby oil or coconut oil) to remove those bits of wax that are still stuck to your body. Gently massaging the dried wax with oil should loosen it right away.

Choosing the Right Wax

When it comes to men’s waxing, choosing the right kind of wax for men is crucial. There are two main players in this game: hard wax and soft wax. Imagine hard wax as the superhero that swoops in, gently gripping the hair without a fuss, especially great for the likes of chest hair. These waxes come in various forms - beads, strips, you name it. But hold up, we're diving into the pros and cons of each. Hard wax definitely takes the cake when it comes to men’s waxing with lesser pain, mess and more effective results.

Soft wax is more adhesive which pulls the hair from the follicle more efficiently. We find this method to be the most effective protocol to wax. Our technique is used in this practice to ensure hair never breaks off and each bulb of hair is pulled from the follicle correctly.

Men’s Waxing Kit

Men, you need a few tools first to get started on waxing. Or just grab your home waxing kit and mirrors to get started! Home waxing kits are an excellent investment to make at-home waxing a regular thing.

The waxing procedure

  1. Cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser.
  2. Set your wax warmer to 150-175 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Next, we apply the wax gently.
  4. Pull your skin taut with two fingers, and use the other hand to spread the wax nice and thick. Go at least for two layers. This helps the wax stick to the hair properly.
  5. Yes, men’s skin might be all tough and strong, but even men’s skin needs some extra love and care post-waxing. This helps you to maintain smoother, longer-lasting results after waxing. The pulling and tugging from waxing can create some irritation, redness and inflammation and this is completely natural. The gentle formula of the soothing gel or spray cools and hydrates the skin, leaving you with a refreshing sensation.

For the next 48 hours, let's keep that smooth chest, supple legs and arms or your groomed face away from the harsh sun.

Shaving as an Alternative

When it comes to a man’s pubic hair area, there are two main ways to get rid of the hair down there: wax it off or shave it off. The point of this article is not to persuade you one way or the other, but to inform you so you can make your own damn decision. Knowledge is power, men.

When it comes to the groin area, a lot of guys ask if they should wax everything. By everything, they mean the bush, the shaft, and the berries. In our opinion, waxing works well for the pubic hair area, but when it comes to your testicles, we actually recommend shaving those.
