What Causes Gray/White Eyebrows?

There are multiple reasons that may lead to premature eyebrow hair graying. The leading causes of premature graying of eyebrows are:

  • Pigment Imbalance: Hair and eyebrows get their color from a pigment called melanin. An imbalance in the composition of melanin may cause eyebrows to gray.
  • Hormonal Imbalances: These may result from an unhealthy lifestyle or use of certain medications.
  • Smoking: The pre-oxidant effect of smoking may damage the melanocytes, the melanin-producing cells. Hence, smoking may cause premature graying of hair.
  • Unhealthy Lifestyle: Following an unhealthy lifestyle with a poor diet containing refined and processed foods may lead to premature hair graying. Deficiencies of essential nutrients (vitamin B12, iron, etc.) may cause premature hair graying.
  • Genetics/Heredity: Anecdotal evidence suggests that people with a family history of premature graying of hair may also end up with gray eyebrows.
  • Stress: High levels of stress can induce oxidative stress within your body. This, in turn, may contribute to premature graying of your hair and eyebrows.

One way to reduce oxidative stress and even stimulate hair growth is to use topical melatonin.

Best Ways To Cover Gray Eyebrows

  • Plucking: Plucking may be a good option if only a couple of eyebrow hairs have turned gray. However, do not follow this method if most of the hair is gray.
  • Eyebrow Pencil Or Palette: Various shades of eyebrow pencils or enhancers and palettes are available that may help with tonal enhancement, give a nice shadowing effect, and cover gray eyebrows.
  • Temporary Dyes: Various temporary dyes are available on the market. These may be used to mask graying eyebrows and make them look fuller. Just make sure there is no color variation between the two eyebrows.
  • Mascara: In the absence of an eyebrow pencil or palette, you can use mascara for covering grays, shading, and grooming your eyebrows without smudging.

Kerry Lou, a makeup artist and a food, travel, fashion and fitness vlogger, shared her experience with darkening her eyebrows in a Youtube video. She says, “I’m darkening this area of my right brow, but I’m not going higher than the brow as I did on my left brow (i).” She uses a brow pencil to carefully shape and define her brows, emphasizing that slight corrections are essential. She also highlighted the significance of using a clean mascara wand to help brush the brows into shape.

DIY Eyebrow Tint

Why use a DIY eyebrow tint? Like most beauty products out there, finding an eyebrow dye, or an eyebrow dye kit, that is truly all natural (and chemical-free) can be a challenge. Now, let’s talk about how to dye your eyebrows. While many opt for a salon professional, you can easily do this yourself.

Start at the inner part of your brow (closest to the bridge of your nose), which is where the brows are more dense. Using a spoolie brush or a small wooden stick, dab on the dye to the end of your brow focusing on the center first, then you can go back and get the little stray hairs along the edges. I recommend doing one brow at a time. You can use a timer set at about 15-20 minutes for the dye to take effect.

Wipe off the dye with a wet cotton ball or paper towel. You may need to add a bit of pressure or use a little back and forth motion for the best removal. Keep in mind that if you you do not remove it, it may continue to dye or darken. Washing your face after removing the dye also helps. Repeating the process about every three to four weeks can keep your eyebrows looking shapely.

Choosing the Right Color

Your first instinct may be to find a dark color. Once you’ve decided on the shade you’re aiming for, add the coffee grounds and cocoa powder to a small bowl. Coffee grounds are great for more than just a facial scrub - they can also help tint the eyebrows! Coffee grounds are a natural way to stain the brows. Plus it’s a great way to use today’s leftover coffee grounds Adding the cocoa powder is important for a lighter shade. So use less cocoa powder if you want a darker shade.

Now add the coconut oil, honey and aloe vera gel. It’s no secret that coconut oil offers antibacterial qualities, but it also helps bind these ingredients together. The honey is a great skin healer. Even though your eyebrows may not need healing, the honey can promote healthy skin in the brow area while also helping to bind the ingredients together.

Blend everything together and let it sit for about 5 minutes or so before applying. Now that you have your very own eyebrow dye, you can keep those brows looking perfect!

Keep in mind that you want to follow your brow shape as you apply it. Start with the thicker inner brow area and end with the outer area. You can layer the tint until you’ve achieved your desired color, but it will take about 20 minutes for the tint to dye. If you want the color to be darker, you can allow it to sit a bit longer or make your next batch with less cocoa as noted previously. Add the coffee grounds and cocoa powder to a small bowl. Blend well and let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes or so before applying.
