How to Apply Mascara for Longer Lashes: A Comprehensive Guide

When it comes to eyelashes, much like eyebrows, no two pairs are quite the same. Just like the hair on your head, lashes can be thick or thin, full or sparse, curly or straight, long or short, and a full spectrum of colors. From lengthening to volumizing, there’s a mascara for every lash type and every desired effect. This guide provides comprehensive steps and tips to achieve longer-looking lashes with mascara.

Prepping Your Lashes

1. Curl Your Lashes

Always start by curling your lashes before mascara application. Use a lash curler to accentuate the natural curl of your lashes. This step is particularly beneficial if you have straight lashes that don’t have a natural curl. A lash curler will help your lashes to hold their curl and preps them for a maximizing, curl-effect mascara application. Taking the time to perform this step will only help to emphasize the curl of your lashes.

2. Apply Lash Thickener and Conditioner (Optional)

Follow with Lash Thickener and Conditioner if you’re going for a full lash look and let this dry. Lash Thickener & Conditioner is a lash conditioner that adds thickness and volume to the lashes prior to mascara application. It goes on white but will be totally covered after you add your usual mascara.

Mascara Application Techniques

1. Opening the Mascara Correctly

Whichever mascara you have chosen, it’s important not to swirl or pump the wand into the tube. The temptation to pump a mascara wand into the tube to pick up more product can alter the formula of your mascara; when you wiggle a mascara wand around in the tube, you are pushing air into the formula which causes it to dry out more quickly. Instead, open your mascara by twisting the lid and removing the wand smoothly and swiftly.

2. Removing Excess Mascara

To make sure you’re getting good lash separation and to avoid clumping, wipe off any excess formula by scraping the brush against the lip of the wand before applying. A good mascara wand will pick up the optimal amount of product, but if your mascara wand has picked up clumps or you are looking to create a more dressed-down mascara look, try scraping any excess product onto the inside of your mascara tube. By doing this, you are controlling how much product is deposited onto your lashes while also minimizing the risk of experiencing mascara flaking or clumping.

3. Applying Mascara to the Upper Lashes

With the mascara wand, start at the base of your lashes and wiggle it back and forth to coat the lashes evenly while keeping them separated. The best way to apply mascara is to turn the wand horizontally as this mirrors the natural curvature of the lash line. With your wand, brush as close to the root of the lash as possible and pull upwards towards the tip to ensure lashes are evenly coated. Tilting your head upwards while applying mascara helps to reach the root of the top lashes, making your eyes appear more open and providing room to nestle your mascara wand closer to the lash line.

4. Separating and Defining Lashes

Once your lashes are coated with mascara, wiggle your mascara wand through your lashes to help them appear more separated, lifted, and defined. The bristles will groom and style your lashes to create a more dramatic, fanned-out, eye-enhancing look.

5. Applying Mascara to Corner Lashes

A horizontal mascara application is the fastest way to coat your lashes with mascara, but tilting your wand vertically will give you greater precision. Holding the mascara wand vertically allows you to use the tip of it to reach the tiny hairs on the inner and outer corners of your lash line. The tip of your mascara effortlessly reaches the contours of your lash line and gives you more control over your mascara, making it less likely to smudge onto your eye area when coating those hard-to-reach baby lashes.

6. Applying Mascara to the Lower Lashes

Don’t forget to apply mascara to your bottom lashes! Some people leave their lower lash line bare because they find their bottom lashes too sparse to apply mascara, but makeup can seem incomplete without dreamy, defined-looking bottom lashes! With the tip of your mascara wand, use vertical, wiggling motions along your bottom lash line to grip each lash. Applying eyeliner along your bottom lash line to help it look thicker and more dimensional. Focus your mascara on the outer corners of your lower lash line as this will create a more lifted, cat-eye effect.

7. Layering Mascara

To prevent your mascara from clumping, let each coat dry for about 30 seconds before adding the next. For a more open and rounded effect, apply an extra coat (or two) to center lashes. If you love length and volume don't be afraid to layer to different formulas.

8. The "Wriggle and Blink" Technique

Instead of tilting your head back, widening your eyes, and delicately brushing through your lashes a few times like you usually do, try this: Keep your head straight and squint your eyes, then push the mascara wand into the base of your lashes-yes, your lids might get a bit messy, but don’t worry-and wriggle it back and forth about five times to really load up the roots of your lashes with formula. Then, instead of brushing the wand up and over the rest of your lashes, hold it still at your lash line and blink hard through the bristles to really force the mascara to coat your lashes. Your lashes will pick up more mascara through the sheer force of blinking than they do when you gingerly brush it on. Repeat the wriggle-and-blink as desired/necessary. The result is thick, voluminous, falsie-level lashes.

9. Fanning Out the Lashes

Fan out the lashes by starting at the outer corner of your eye, and pull lashes up and out with brush. Move to center of the eye and pull upwards.

Specific Techniques for Different Lash Effects

How to Apply Mascara for Length

To give eyelashes the appearance of extra length, use your mascara wand to grip each individual hair and coax them outwards. Moving your mascara wand towards the outer corner of your eye as you apply will help to give your lashes a fanned-out appearance. When you look at your lashes straight on they can appear less noticeable, but when they flick outwards it gives them the illusion of being longer and wispier.

How to Apply Mascara for Volume

The more mascara you apply, the more volume you will build up. When you apply lashings and lashings of your favourite mascara, your lashes appear thicker, exaggerated, and full of volume! Volume starts at the centre of your lashes. If you apply several coats of mascara in the corners of your lashes, they could start to look spidery. Applying mascara right down to the root of your lashes will help your lash line to look thicker, fuller, and more voluminous. Having gaps in your mascara breaks the illusion of volume, and this is especially true for those with fair hair.

How to Apply Mascara for Curl

Once you have gripped your lashes with your mascara wand and are nestling your brush from root to tip, try delicately rolling your wrist in an upward curve to guide your lashes into a more pronounced curl. Clumps of mascara can make your lashes heavy and can make them release their curl. To get rid of any clumps, I recommend using a clean cotton bud or spoolie to brush through your lashes and remove any excess mascara.

How to Apply Mascara for Separation

If you love the look of supersized, separated lashes, try brushing through your lashes with a clean spoolie or lash comb before applying your mascara. You can use the tip of your mascara wand as a lash styling tool. The tip is the finest part of a mascara wand and it’s perfect for getting a more precise mascara application. When you use a mascara formula that’s very wet, it can cause lashes to stick together which loses some of the separating effect.

Choosing the Right Mascara

Consider the type of mascara wand. This formula creates a darker and full lashline while creating a volumizing effect with its thick, oversized wand. This mascara formula is ideal if you’re looking to add length and definition. This water resistant, lengthening, volumizing formula delivers high-impact color and conditioning bamboo and provitamin B5 with a straight, spiralized wand for even application.

Dealing with Mascara Issues

How to Stop Mascara from Clumping

Mascara clumps are the result of mascara sticking together and bunching up. For larger mascara clumps, you may be able to remove them with your fingers. It’s best to wait until mascara is dry before you start to clean it up.The more mascara you apply, the more you risk mascara clumping, so an argument can be made that less is more.

How to Stop Mascara from Smudging Under Eyes

Always remove your mascara! If you are applying mascara on lashes that are coated with traces of yesterday’s mascara, your mascara application will be uneven and may result in smudging under the eyes. Mascara is most likely to smudge when it is still wet, so give it time to dry before going about your day. If you continue to experience smudging around your eyes, try applying your eye makeup before your foundation and concealer. Bare skin is easier to clean up - just take some makeup remover on a cotton pad and remove any mascara smudges from around the eyes.

Additional Tips

Cleaning Up Smudges

To clean up the smudges fast, gently rub a damp Q-tip over the marks after they dry (mascara is harder to remove when it’s wet), or, try my personal favorite: a bit of eyeliner.

Mascara Sharing

Never share your mascara.

Makeup Removal

Always be gentle when removing makeup around the eye area. Don’t tug, scrub, or rub. Use a gentle formulation like our Gentle Makeup Remover and keep eyes closed as you easily remove all traces of eye makeup.
