Mad Eyebrows Drawing Tutorial: How to Draw Anime Eyes with an Angry Expression

Anime and manga characters are known for their expressive eyes, and the eyebrows play a key role in conveying emotion. This tutorial provides a beginner-friendly guide on how to draw anime or manga eyes with an angry expression. This guide is very simple and beginner friendly. The eyes are drawn without too much detail and with very basic shading. You can see a line by line drawing video of the eyes above with a more detailed explanation of the drawing steps below (be sure to look at both). Please don’t forget to leave a like.

Understanding the Role of Eyebrows in Expressing Emotion

There are many ways to give an anime or manga character an angry expression. One of the most important parts of one are of course the eyes. This tutorial shows one easy way of drawing these with an angry look. Before diving into the tutorial, it's important to understand how eyebrows contribute to expressing emotions.

Take a look at the three faces in the following reference illustration. When you look at each face, how does it make you feel? The top face has neutral eyebrows. The eyebrows are in a resting position - no muscles are pulling on them, causing no lines or wrinkles on the face. Next, look at the face on the bottom left. Can you tell that he feels angry? Look at the final face in the trio. This face is suited to a range of negative emotions - sadness, despair, or fear, for example. In this image, the brows are raised on the inside - the opposite of the angry face. We've been looking at sample faces showing ONLY the eyebrows. Look closely at the eyebrows of this crying anime boy. Most anime and manga characters have eyebrows. Imagine what the crying boy would look like without them. True, you would still know he was crying.

Angry characters can also be fun to draw because their brows are so much different from the others. Practice characters with "knitted" or "furrowed" angry eyebrows - slanted down and inward toward the nose. Sometimes, eyebrows are purposefully left off to create an unsettling effect.

1. Outline the Eye Shapes

Begin by outlining the overall shapes of the eyes. For an angry look draw them narrower than you would for their relaxed state. Also draw the inner ends of the each eye lower down than the outer ends. As the eyes are narrower the irises will be less visible than normal.

2. Focus on the Eyebrows

The eyebrows are the most important aspect of getting angry looking eyes. Draw them with their inner ends significantly lower than for a normal expression.

3. Add Highlights

Draw a pair of highlights inside each eye (light reflecting from them). Add a large one to show the main light source and a smaller one for the reflection. Optionally you can draw the pupils first and then draw the highlights over top of them and erase the overlapping lines.

4. Draw the Pupils

Inside the irises draw the pupil.

5. Eyelashes

Finally add some hints of individual eyelashes to the outer ends of the eye outlines. If you want to make the eyelashes something other than black you can erase the parts of the outlines that are at the base of each of the lashes.

Tips and Tricks for Enhancing the Angry Expression

  • Size Matters: The bigger, the more emotional it is. So when you’re making Angry Eyes and want that extra boost of expression, increase the overall size of the eye.
  • Iris Size: When drawing the iris you should draw it small for an angrier expression.
  • Mouth Expression: The mouth also plays a big role when drawing any kind of expression. The curve of the mouth and its size are two other very important aspects to pay attention to.
  • Experiment: Once again it’s all about experimenting and trying new things, go completely overboard with it.

The Importance of Color in Conveying Emotion

Color is very important when drawing. You can also use colors to convey emotions. Red is the color most used to show rage, but some oranges, purple and even yellows also work very well! Notice how each emotion has a specific color. If this is the main subject of it, then take the chance to go all the way. It all depends on what you want to go for. Not only in a colored piece but in a black and white one. If all of the painting as the same weight, the eyes of the viewer will get lost and lose any focus. Give some parts of your painting more emphasis than others. Balance your paintings not only through the drawing but color as well. Each emotion can be conveyed through a color. In fact, it can even be easier! You still need to pay attention to how you draw the face, though.

Additional Considerations

  • Reference Images: Remember you can always take photos of yourself to help you better get a reference image, or use reference images online.
  • Start Simple: I’ve seen some stickman comics that can portray the emotion in a better way, than with something very complex.
  • Practice: Many artists have benefited by drawing a single character or a group of characters with different expressions. For example, can you use the concepts we discussed with the negative/sad eyebrows to draw a sad face? How would closing the eyes or widening them change the emotion? What about a scared character?
  • Don't be afraid to exaggerate: If you’ve done all the steps and still want to add a little more “oomph” to the face, focus on the details! Same goes with the eyebrows when they grow very close together.
