The researchers conducted experiments on 15 commercially available wax melts, both unscented and scented (e.g., lemon, papaya, tangerine, and peppermint), in a model house.

During and after this period, the researchers continuously sampled the air a few yards (meters) away from the wax melts and found airborne nanoparticles, between 1 and 100 nanometers wide, at levels that were comparable to previously reported levels for traditional, combustion-based candles. Additionally, using literature data, the team calculated that a person could inhale similar amounts of nanoparticles from wax melts as from traditional candles and gas stoves.

VOCs and Nanoparticle Formation

Previous research has shown that scented wax melts emit more airborne scent compounds than traditional candles. The direct heating of the wax maximizes its surface area, thereby releasing more fragrance - such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) made of hydrocarbons - into the air. The main VOCs emitted from the wax melts were terpenes, such as monoterpenes and monoterpenoids.

Scientists already know that these VOCs can interact with other airborne chemicals to produce ultrafine particles, which have been linked to negative health effects when inhaled. The researchers identified that the airborne terpenes reacted with ozone and formed sticky compounds, which aggregated into nanoscale particles.

The study highlights that a person could inhale similar amounts of nanoparticles from wax melts as from traditional candles and gas stoves. Alarmingly high deposition rates have also been recorded in the lungs. This raises concerns about potential respiratory issues and other negative health effects associated with inhaling these particles.

The NP spectrum and rate of production resembles the production of particles from sources of actual combustion, even though no combustion was occurring. SWM induces NPF, which subsequently exposes the respiratory system to significant amounts of NP pollutants that can directly deposit into the upper respiratory tract at a median rate of 2.9 × 1010/min.

Factors Influencing Nanoparticle Formation

Several factors can influence the formation and growth of nanoparticles from scented wax melts:

  • Terpene Levels: SWMs that emitted higher terpene levels were associated with rapid growth of nucleated particles. All terpenes are not equally reactive with ozone. Linalool and d-limonene, for example, are more reactive as compared to menthol and menthone.
  • Ozone Concentration: Airborne terpenes react with ozone and form sticky compounds, which aggregated into nanoscale particles.
  • Ventilation: Ventilation also contributes to the rate of particle growth. The plume was markedly stronger at the lower ventilation rate. Nucleation and growth beyond 3 nm (Table S5).
